Cathy's Profiles

Andrew, just a quick thank you for all the input - finally getting beautiful prints with a much better understanding of what's going on. Was able to get a 3D wireframe of my printer vs the Adobe 1998 color space and it's very good with most of the colors contained. Only a few of the orange/red/yellow fall out of gamut. But the pRGB color space is even better, but I don't know how to designate that inside of the ACR and working space of CS3 - though I could print with it inside of Qimage. Here, about 99% of the available printer's colors are available.

Andew,
Worked in a studio where we had a Kodak 8600 and wanted to tweek the
output, a couple of folks we contacted said don't bother, too
difficult. Received the same answer when I had to manage a Sony
UP-70D that was definitely off color. Maybe I called the wrong
people, could very well be, but that is where I got this impression.
Actually Kodak Color flow was made to do precisely that for their proofers at the time. There were tags in the profile editor directly linked to the printers CM system , links etc building on the fly device link profiles, if I remeber right (a very long time ago!).

The hard part of dye subs is the temperature of fusion is controllable only up to a certain point, then it's just going to clip.

Charles, need a little help printing my targets for Cathy - cannot get a "raw" print. I have a Shinko 1245 as well and currently having some problems creating a custom profile. I cannot turnoff the icm intent within the printer driver. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi Stuart,

Select "Print Setup" then click on "Properties." A window will open that has 4 tabs. Click on "Color" (the 4th tab from the right). Then select "ICM disabled" from the dropdown box and click on the "OK" button. That should do it.

That's fine, but then there's also a pulldown for rendering intent that cannot be disabled - it's this control that I asking about. I'll check the driver version in the morning and let you know what I have installed - but I believe it's the newest version avalilable from the Shinko website.

It's most beneficial to read informative reports of the good and bad experiences of posters. In my case, I used Don's Profiles and found that his responce to mailings and emails do not take days--more like WEEKS!! Well aside from the lengthy waits, I'd be satisfied, but my Don's Profiles profiles are not much improved over the previously unacceptable !! Wasted time and money. I'll be working with Kathy to try to get my Epson (CIS/Inkjetfly) back to proper color.

Thanks.
Fred

I haven't tested it by trying out different combinations, but I believe that once you disable ICM, ICM intent becomes irrelevant.

That was my thought but Cathy seems to think it still has an effect. I did a quick test early this morning and didn't see an obvious difference. Will study the results later and post up my opinon.

She did say my targets "didn't seem right" thought I followed the instructions to the letter - doing the best I could to achieve a raw print. With the targets I supplied her, my custom icc is still not acceptable - too contrasty and the blues in particular are off. The latest version of the Shinko icc is much better, especially when printing with the perceptual intent within qimage. In particular the flesh tones are more natural with the Shinko icc then Cathy's - and that's very important to me considering I'm a portrait photographer. But frankly I think it could be improved upon.

Per Andrew's recommendation, I'm working in ProPhoto & sending 16 bit images to the printer. FWIW - following his advise has made a huge improvement in my output - a quantum leap actually. But the color could still be improved imho.
