Pro needs some Nikon D300 advice

I second that! A great camera strap and comes in a choice of leather colours (for the ladies?).

I had Leica in the past and nothing compares to the build quility. I think for what you are doing the D300 with the 18-200 can cover almost anything as the Camera can auto ISO to 3200 with no problem. I have rented the other lenses and they are just too heavy for me at 61. I use a 12-24 as the second lens. Everyone loves the results. Yes you can do better with the bigger glass but the weight is 4 times as much. You might as well go full frame. I think if you like the M8 and you get good results stick with it. I can no longer use two different cameras. I have a D200 and a D300. They are very close. The M8 has had teething problems and has had a recall to replace the shutter and sensor. You are in the Rolls Royce class and my need to stay there. I have sold everything I had to avoid confusion in shooting. You need to be consistant and not try two such radically different cameras. Charles L. Mims Advice is worth what you pay for it.

I guess it's all relative. My most used lens is my 300mm f/2.8 so when I have the 70-200VR on it is like helium. I call it my hiking lens. When I am travelling light - I take it mounted on my D300 in a small bag where I can pull it out easily. This will do everything from sports action to portraits. To get the range it offers with the speed ... it is hard to beat.
Just checked B&h ouch big difference in size

180mm 72 filter 5.7 long 1.70 lbs
70-200 77 filter 8.5 long 3.20 lbs

That is a pretty big difference . Hmmm

Hi Guy,

I recently sold my M8 and lenses. Like you I need DSLR for macro and tele, and sadly I can't afford to run two systems, so I had to sell it and I bought a D300 to be friends with my Nikkor lenses. The corner sharpness achieved with some M lenses is a far stretch for even the latest pro optics from Nikkor, and I am going to miss it. That being said, I really like the D300. It's a great little camera, and it's much more versatile than the M8. I hope you will enjoy yours.

What is sad about the M8 is the IR-issue. I was well aware of it before getting it, and using UVIR's solves it completely - but that rules out gems like CV 12mm, and created head ache concerning nice third party lenses, like Zeiss, with M-mount. I have a hunch though, that the next M will have this "issue" solved, and I might just get in line then.

Enjoy your Nikon!
I have a second M8 and 10 lenses , well cared for there. This is
mainly for tele ,work, product and shift work

Hello!

I can't help you with your question but maybe you can give me an advice...:) I bought a D 300 and I would like to know what lenses are good for some jobs(reportages) with no zoom and less light. All my friends have canon and I really don't know who to ask and what to do. They usualy have a 5D with 35mm f1.4 and it is very good for dark places(+ 5D is a full-frame...). So, for the D 300 what can I get like, with no deformation on borders? Thank you and I hope you will have the time to give me at least a direction to search. Sorry for troubles but I really don't have someone to ask...

Richard,

I use the 12 uncoded with no filter. The only issue I've had is forgetting to reset the menu back to coded when I change back.

Sorry but wrong....no shutter or sensor replacement recall. There was a hardware fix when the first batch was shipped. Leica announced an OPTIONAL upgrade program and a quieter shutter is one available upgrade. There is a potential possibility of a future sensor optional upgrade but nothing in terms of sensor has been announced.
