It was on full power set to AA (Auto). Manual exposure at 1/30sec,
f/4, ISO 400.
Anyway you could get away with half-power? That, plus the 5th battery, would make a huge improvement in your cycle times.

If you have some handy, try experimenting with rechargeables. I don't know the answer, but I'm wondering if 5 fully-charged 2700maH batteries would signicantly reduce the cycle time.

Higher voltage means shorter recycling time.
But beware for heat builds up and the cool-off periods needed.

That's expensive. The Nikon version is around $140.
It is more expensive, and somewhat riskier to use than the Nikon pack as well, but that said, the Quantum (and similar HV packs) will give you the fastest recycle times. Still the Nikon pack is quite good and somewhat safer to use, though you still need to avoid overheating the flash unit.

A lot can depend on how many shots you're taking in a given time period. Obviously rapid firing (even without an external pack) can lead to problems but even just taking a steady stream of shots can lead to overheating. If you open up the battery compartment and grab hold of a battery to find that it's hot to the touch, you're going to have slower recycle times. Usually, once everything has had a chance to cool down things go back to normal. If you'll be sticking with Speedlights, it can be a good idea to have two or more available when shooting events, swapping between them from time to time to give each a chance to cool off. Quantums, Lumedynes, etc. will provide a stronger duty cycle with heavy use but as with the HV power packs, they cost more also.

Otherwise, maintain as high of an ISO/Aperture combination as you reasonably can. Doing so will help to keep the power requirements down, making life easier on the batteries and the electronics.
