E-410 has arrived...one daft question to you, please

in China and in Japan.
In China for the Chinese market and in Japan for the rest of the world.
That's what I just learned from a dealer in Hong Kong where I bought
the 8mm lens.
That's not really the case. Both my E-410 and E-420, bought new from a reputable USA retailer (with USA warranty) have 'made in China' stamped on the bottom.

The E-410, E-510, and even E-3 are made in China. Period. All have worldwide warranty (but of course, the OP's has NO Olympus warranty, given its questionable origin).

Some ZD lenses are made in China, some in Japan.

Called up my distributor friend. He concurs that E410 and E510 bodies are made in China.

Olympus doesn't sell cameras without body cap, strap, battery/charger or cables. Period.

The title says 'new', and 'anti-shock'. While the E-410 has what Olympus calls anti-shock, it's a euphemism for mirror lock up, not image stabilization (as the uninformed might think). Yours is not the way Olympus sells a body-only camera, new or reconditioned. Given the misleading (or lying) nature of the listing, I don't see how anyone could possibly trust this seller.
well, it looks ok...i do hear a faint rattle when i, very lightly,
shake it (please tell me you hear that too).

Here is the link to the seller and his body-only offers...it's in
german but all you need to know is that it says it's been
"checked-by-manufacturer" and comes with "12-month warranty". This
one is maybe the 10th one he's offered in the last 2 weeks...but in
Ebay Forum searches I found no users discussing them...only a couple
of "Thank You's" from his positive rating list that pertained to this
offer:

And below the one I have:

Found this by searching the forum's previous posts, as I also tried the sequence given above and it didn't work on my E-410 (close, but not quite right).

The correct sequence for E-410 is:

power on, open card reader door, press the MENU and OK buttons together (at this point the screen should say "OLYMPUS E-410")

Then press up, down, left, right, shutter, up. Then push the right arrow to get to page 2, and the number beside letter R is the number of shutter actuations.

This page explains some of the other gibberish you see in there:

I wish you luck with your bargain E-410 and hope it gives you no trouble. You may be fine, but like everyone else has said, no body cap really makes me wonder how competent this seller is. They might not be real cooperative with a return either... please keep us posted whatever you decide.

If my conversions are correct, you paid US $275 for the body and a cardboard box which came from only God knows where, and are now forced to go out and buy a cheap and questionable in terms of safe $3 chinese battery and charger (based on one of your other posts here), body cap, lens, strap, cables and whatever else comes in the box when shipped by Olympus, and you have a possibly questionable warranty.

Certainly you could have shopped around a little better? For the life of me I can't imagine why the camera would ship with all those missing items.

I just looked at Cameta...

http://cgi.ebay.com/Olympus-Evolt-E-410-Digital-Camera-14-42mm-Lens-E410_W0QQitemZ350044668985QQihZ022QQcategoryZ43457QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262

This is an example only, but there you can get the 410 with all the other stuff that is supposed to ship with it, including a lens, plus more stuff you may need, for $390. That's a lousy $115 more, and no grief.

I realize there are shipping costs involved, along with whatever horrendous taxes you Europeans must fork over to your governments and I'm certainly not suggesting you buy from this source due to those shipping cost and taxes, but my point here is, in an effort to save money, you'll end up spending the same amount locally anyway (if not more) had you given this all a little thought, and would have more peace at mind had you just looked a little harder and been willing to fully open your wallet at the time of purchase and not tried to piece-meal your kit together.

Please, tell me you're not buying your SanDisk cards dirt cheap on eBay as well.

I'm continually impressed over what people will put themselves through in order to save a few bucks. If it's impossible to find Oly products from reputable sources in Germany, other than in the manner that you went through, then forgive me and blame Oly's German marketing efforts.

If on the other hand you're forced into these situations because of high taxation, then band together as a people and overthrow your current government.

That last option is, in fact, purely optional :)

I do hope it all works out for you. Truly, I hate to see anybody get screwed.

Scheiße...on their site ther seller claims they're some kind of Olympus B-wares dealer. I wonder where they get all the goods from?

In hindsight, paying another hundred to get the proper Oly guarantee not-to-mention the proper battery is a much cleverer idea.

If after testing, I find enough reason to demand a refund...I will. I've definitely made the right choice in terms of the brand and model, just hasted it when it came to the purchase.

Let's see...

Thanks Steve...some words of wisdom there.

My own eagerness and foolishness caused me to rush-buy a €200 DSLR.

I am continuing at a more measured pace now.

And I do look forward to seeing some photos :)

Have you tried to register the camera yet? I'd hold off until you can verify the machine is in proper working order. Hopefully you won't encounter any issues when registering, as in this camera is already registered, or, this serial number is invalid. Be certain to run the camera through its paces once the lens arrives. Not sure how long you have to send it back to the seller.

Oh, and did you determine how many shutter activations it has? Someone posted a method of determining that in this thread.

Cameta and OlympusAuctions sell 'B-goods' on eBay, with ALL the normal accessories. There is NO excuse, NO explanation for a DSLR to EVER be shipped without a body cap. At first I thought it was some kind of 'Olympus ships the camera to the various geographies without the accessories, then the geographies add items with appropriate language, power plugs, etc. But, the factory would NEVER ship cameras without a body cap. EVER.

Being shipped a body without a body cap, much less the other standard accessories, isn't enough reason?

Before running out and buying the usual neck strap and calling that "good"; how about investigating various models from various manufacturers. E.g. there is a strap which has some elastic or something like that. The "sting" of the camera's bouncing and jouncing shouldn't make you go looking for a massage at night. (That's what they would have you believing, anyhow). There is one with which the camera rides behind your back and yet is quite quick to bring to bear (they have a video so you can see it). So many different designs. Put it to the gang for ideas and testimonies.

Fine so far:) Thanks everyone for all your worthwhile input.

Status Report:

Today I managed to test with the 17-45mm, which has now become my first lens (massive thanks to the generosity of our forum friend here: Claus A). Handy as he is with the controls, Claus did a quick shutter actuation check and it read a touch over 100 actuations.

So that meant it turned on, had not had too many releases and was not offering obvious defects in the test pictures. The viewfinder and LCD seemed in good nick too.

Below are 4 pics plus their 100% crop from just a few hours ago...straight-out-of-cam on SHQ JPG setting / Manual mode with S-AF and ISO 100 - only reduced in size so they're an easy fit here.

They look ok. The crops don't look that sharp but I think that's normal for a first day use rather than indicative of anything sinister regarding the camera's functionality. The cheap battery is still going strong after almost 200 pics.

Still, time will tell - tonight will try lots of indoor low light stuff and watch for dodgy pixels or banding.

The camera is great...what a joy to use! You guys are great too - I feel like I've not just got the right camera (albeit from a questionable source...sorry Oly), but am in the right forum for it too. Here today's samples:

(note to self: I am happy, I just think it's weird to smile when you're taking a picture of yourself)

looks like dholl got a good deal, after all.

At least with Olympus equipment, the EUR$$ conversion rate is, sadly, 1:1 in Germany.

His camera is new, about 100 shutter releases, the viewfinder and sensor, at first look, are dust free. No defects visible, it looked better than my E410 after one month of use (I bought it at a shop - all the cables, caps, software, battery, charger etc. in the box, for EUR 360, body only, which was the best deal I could get in Berlin). So dholl's 200 EUR-deal is quite good.

All best,

Claus.
