Use DSLR more than P&S?

I carry my G7 with me always and that has served its purpose.
But when I have my 40D with me, I use that almost exclusively.
Now to be fair, I should use the G7 when I want lots of DOF.

I bought my son the XTi for Christmas with a choice lens (not the kit). He asked me to get familiar with it and then teach him since he doesn't have the time while he's in college.

Russ..., BIG mistake.......I can't put it down and stop taking pics with it....... I'm obsessed over the increase in IQ, DoF, speed of AF and continuous fps over my P&S. Granted my A610 is a gem of a compact with outstanding IQ but when I go out to shoot for a specific reason I now grab the big guns but the A610 still comes along in the backpack. Unfortunately I rarely use it........

Now I'm looking to buy a 40D for myself and share the lenses with my son.....(check my profile).....see what I mean??....3 months ago all I had was the A610.

Hey Russ !

I have not replied to one of your posts in a long time, mostly because a pretty little Nikon D40 tumbled out of my stocking at Christmas this year.....so my G7 fell out of "heavy rotation" as they say in radio.... and I have been in "foreign lands" over on the Nikon forums...

The G7 now "lives" in a pocket in my backpack - which means I almost always have it at hand....even though the D40 is small enough to carry daily as well, I only bring it along (plus lenses) when I am planning to make pictures.....so the G7 is my "opportunity" camera now....and it just can't be beat for that....and gets plenty of use.....just less than before, which is good, maybe it will last a while....

I am just so happy to be fortunate enough to have both....

You love photography Russ - why shouldn't you have another camera ?

The little Nikon might suit you....it's just so small, and going now for less than $500 online, with a perfectly usable kit lens....the 6 mp files that come out of it are just terrific (and compact)....and you can shoot at ISO 1600 without care.....the shutter is really quiet....

here are some from a trip to Barbuda in January....

(70-300 mm VR at 250mm, 1/300, iso 800, never could have got this with the G7)

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=6941358

(18-55 kit, iso 400, look how perfect the colors are, this is a "basic" jpg...6 mp basic jpg is only 800 kb !! )

( G7 got into the act as well )

Hey Russ,

forgot!

While I have been using the Nikon D40 quite a bit more to shoot pictures, the G7 has been producing little videos regularly, and these really are priceless....

so, for instance, I came back from Barbuda with about 1,500 stills, of which the G7 contributed maybe about 10%, but I also came back with about 40 min of video, and just love that I have that ability, and a decent still camera, all in one great fairly small rugged package....which lives in my backpack as I said

in fact, if I could only have one, I would probably give up the Nikon, because I like the little videos so much, but the DSLR gets more actual use...

so go ahead and get another DSLR....just hang on to that little G camera as well....

Just an opinion or point of view , !We have a D40 and a few lenses amazing small DSLR with the Nikon quality feel and JPEG IQ to die for, The G9 was not what we needed or liked to take out in pocket or purse if the D40 was not suitable , G9 too big and no decent grip could not get to like it at all , we have smaller cameras for that , Fuji F31 Canon Ixus 860 and 850 for pocket use these produce photos as good ad the G9 in our opinion BUT the DSLR is the business , So DSLR if not small pocket camera . Just our choice of weapons,

I find that I miss my 30D and am thinking of buying another. The G9
is a remarkable camera b ut there are some things the 30D will do
that I miss. Just curious as to how many use their DSLR regularly yet
still use a P&S.

Hi Russ,

Interesting post! After I got my G9 I thought maybe I should give up my DSLR, however after giving it some good thought I knew I couldn't do it.

The G9 is a great little camera that takes wonderful photos. But there are many things it just can't do (or do as well) as a DSLR. For instance I have a Nikon D80 and I can take my SB600 flash and use it as a slave off the camera and the camera will trigger it. You can get some very nice shots with an off camera flash. With the G9 you can do this but need to buy a unit to trigger the flash (the canon trigger cost over $200).

This past weekend I took my D80 and my G9 to New York City and shot around Central Park. Photos from both cams were good but the D80 shots were just plain better. Also depth of field is so much better with the DSLR.

I know what you are feeling and I say go for it. One suggestion however, take a look at Nikon. The D80 is a great camera and not as big and heavy as the 30D. The Nikon flash system always seems to get better reviews than Canon and the D80 will trigger a slave flash without buying a master flash or trigger unit. I know you are very used to the Canon, but if you are starting fresh, look at the D80. Also look at the Nikor 18-200mm VR lens - Canon doesn't have anything like it and it is a great all around lens. This lens and the 50mm 1.8 for portraits is all you may need.

Good luck with your decision.

My best, Tom

was a wonderful camera for me and I sure miss it but the cost of good lenses was what caused me to change. No comparison between DSLR and P&S IMO, but I do love the G9 even with the limitations.

Russ

Thank you Maria. Yes, the DSLR is much more exciting in every way except for convenience. You will love the Tok 12-24. I owned three of them over time and loved each one.

Russ

No neck trouble for me. Even at my age I can carry a 30D around my neck all day with no problems. Love it!

Russ

It is all relative, John. I love the G9 and tried many other P&S types before buying it. The G9 handles much better than the others but that is just the way I feel, not set in stone:-))

Russ

I have to be a minimalist since I have no money coming in to replace what I spend:-)) Makes a a big difference, or did when I was working. But, no way will I part with the G9. It is by far the best I have used since leaving my 30D. I could not afford a 5D but the 30D is in reach. Lenses are what kill me financially, so I am getting two cheap ones which I liked and stay with them and my G9. Thanks for the kind reply.

but you do not give proper credence to human foibles. Some of us are creatures of spontaneity and cannot help our thought patterns. No harm in my posting these, and I can always count on getting a good reply from you:-)). Believe me, if I had money coming in to replace what I spend I would never have sold my DSLR gear. I have dreams like so may others and express them in this manner sometimes.

Hey Fred. Thank you for the nice reply. Yes, I love photography and will look into the Nikon. I have a XTi in mind but the 30D was a great favorite and I hope to get another. Lenses are what eat the money. Good luck to you...

Russ

Hank, nothing like a fine DSLR. Head and shoulders above the P&S types but they have their place. Thanks for the reply.

Russ

Tom, you made my day with that nice reply. I am going right now to read up on the D80 and VR lens. My brother has them and loves them.

Russ, now that the new 450D is out the prices on the XTi have dropped considerably. It's a good idea to consider this camera. I've never had a problem with it and always been happy.

I love mine.
