I've got the Ixus 800 - the UK same camera but different model name - and mine makes no distracting noises at all.Picked up a used SD700... Man this thing makes a lot of noise when it
focuses, etc, is that normal? What do yours sound like?

Not quite. The SD850IS is equally as good IQ wise and construction wise and has a few more useful features. (Eg. Face Detection, Shows actual ISO in shooting and playback mode and also shows in all Exif, assignable Blue printer button, ISO Shift, in camera red eye fix to name a few)well. Bought the SD700 used versus something else new because of all
the good things said about it. Seems to be the last really good P&S.
Yeah, they pretty much all make a bit of noise when focusing. I listened to a few different models with varying age and none of them were silent.Picked up a brand new SD800IS, it pretty much makes the same noise as
the SD700 but a little more quietly, I'll chalk it up to being an
older camera.
I don't think the IQ is very good. My old 4MP G2 and $129 A430 are sharper and without the severe NR blurring of grass and foliage at 100-200 ISO. The IS does not seem to work very well either. Some shots are sharp at 1/60 and others are totally motion blurred at the tele end. My indoor flash shots are OK but the outdoor shots are the problem. I ilke the build and features but the IQ doesn't best my cheaper cams. Seems IQ has gone to pot when the cams went past 4MP.Let me suggest one more time, if it's Build Quality and Image Quality
that are of the upmost importance to you...you may want to give the
SD850IS a try. It has both of those qualities and it's lens is
sharper with less distortion than the SD800.

I tried 2 SD1000's last week and the IQ was just as bad. One was
better (but not good) than the other. Neither was as sharp as one I
bought my daughter last May. Guess I'll keep looking but I am
beginning to think the entire crop of 8-12 MP cams are the same IQ
wise. Hope I'm wrong. I don't want to carry my DSLR around all the
time.
I don't think folks are running down the SD800IS so much, to me they are merely stating their opinion based on the copy they have. There are many very positive comments as well. Not sure why folks run down the SD800IS so much.
Well then you should be a real happy camper.sample variation but the copy I have is super. IQ is as nice as the
SD700 I have and though there is some edge softness, it's at the
extremes and is barely noticeable.
