Picked up a used SD700... Man this thing makes a lot of noise when it focuses, etc, is that normal? What do yours sound like?

My SD700IS makes a very slight noise when focusing, like you might expect a lens to do when moving in or out. Unless you are listening for it, you don't notice it.

Mine never made any loud sound when focusing or zooming...it had no trouble focusing at full zoom either. Ditto for my current SD850.

Sometimes it makes a sound a bit like an old dot matrix printer when hunting for focus.

Outside of the odd focusing problem (which, after some goofing around, may just be me) this camera is pretty nice.

I've got the Ixus 800 - the UK same camera but different model name - and mine makes no distracting noises at all.

Focussing is very quiet . zoom naturally makes a slight noise , as would be expected by about three segments of lens moving in and out , but used at normal viewing distance , to me it's certainly no distraction , and with any modest ambient surrounding noise the camera is near soundless.

Maybe if yours is second-hand it's had a LOT of hefty use ? Any idea of the background of it ??

Mine does not make much noise when focusing. Great little cam, BTW.

Well, being out and about today, it's not that noisy. Outside of an occasional goofy sound, it's no louder than the S200 it replaces.

Yes, perhaps it has been tossed around a bit, got it of FleaBay. If all I have is the occasional focus confusion, it will be fine.

Used in manual it takes great pictures. In auto, that AiAF stuff is cr*p, seems to miss the subject 1 out of 4 times.

The S200 was a great camera for me, looks like this one will do as well. Bought the SD700 used versus something else new because of all the good things said about it. Seems to be the last really good P&S.

I've had my SD700IS for over a year. Bought it new from local camera shop. Slight noise when focusing, but so insignificant, i'm not even aware of it....I had to test it just now because I couldn't remember any noise.

Regarding the AiAF, I have it set to OFF and never use it. I'd read that recommendation from other 700IS users on this forum. Also, I agree with others who recommend Digital Zoom OFF and IS Mode....SHOOT ONLY.

I'm very satified with my camera . good luck with yours.

Not quite. The SD850IS is equally as good IQ wise and construction wise and has a few more useful features. (Eg. Face Detection, Shows actual ISO in shooting and playback mode and also shows in all Exif, assignable Blue printer button, ISO Shift, in camera red eye fix to name a few)

Bit of an update here...

Picked up a brand new SD800IS, it pretty much makes the same noise as the SD700 but a little more quietly, I'll chalk it up to being an older camera.

Has the same problem focusing at times too on low contrast subjects.

Let me suggest one more time, if it's Build Quality and Image Quality that are of the upmost importance to you...you may want to give the SD850IS a try. It has both of those qualities and it's lens is sharper with less distortion than the SD800.

I don't think the IQ is very good. My old 4MP G2 and $129 A430 are sharper and without the severe NR blurring of grass and foliage at 100-200 ISO. The IS does not seem to work very well either. Some shots are sharp at 1/60 and others are totally motion blurred at the tele end. My indoor flash shots are OK but the outdoor shots are the problem. I ilke the build and features but the IQ doesn't best my cheaper cams. Seems IQ has gone to pot when the cams went past 4MP.

I tried 2 SD1000's last week and the IQ was just as bad. One was better (but not good) than the other. Neither was as sharp as one I bought my daughter last May. Guess I'll keep looking but I am beginning to think the entire crop of 8-12 MP cams are the same IQ wise. Hope I'm wrong. I don't want to carry my DSLR around all the time.

Unfortunately it appears that the IQ of the later model SD cameras is all over the map. There appear to be good and bad models out there. There have been a number of threads over the past few months discussing this. I went through 2 SD800IS whose IQ and lens softness were terrible. Then tried the SD870 briefly, same lens issues but the IQ was not bad. Then tried the SD850, first one had to be returned for what you called noise smearing and the second one has been great. Unfortunately no 28mm lens which BTW I really wanted but it seems Canon cannot put out a decent summ lens in the SD series cameras.

So we're back to ymmv and crossing of fingers to get a so called "good copy".

Pretty sad inditement of the P&S industry. BTW, I also have a Panny and a Fuji but they too have issues but good points as well, Fuji great for high ISO/ low light...Panny great 28-280mm lens.

Shame to have to juggle 3 p&S cameras but c'est la vie for now.

My SD700IS (Ixus 800) was somewhat noisy while focusing and zooming. What bothered me most was not that but its' IQ was clearly worse than my old S400. Therefore it had to go back. Because dpreview rated SD700 'Highly Recommended' I had thought it could give me better images than my old camera.

Not sure why folks run down the SD800IS so much. I understand there's sample variation but the copy I have is super. IQ is as nice as the SD700 I have and though there is some edge softness, it's at the extremes and is barely noticeable.

I don't think folks are running down the SD800IS so much, to me they are merely stating their opinion based on the copy they have. There are many very positive comments as well.

Well then you should be a real happy camper. :-) My belief is that the SD700 has among the best IQ (along with the SD850) of the late model SD's.

The only real issue I had with the SD800's was with the lens softness and distortion. Unfortunately, with the copies I tried, the lens problems were a lot more than "barely noticeable".
