NYC Panos

I'm pretty much with Alex all the way on these.

I too like the red thing. It is just bright enough without taking
over the image. I like the day to night feel of the sky. I don't like
the pier to the left, by touching the waterline in the background it
is breaking down the overall definition - I'd think raising the
camera about 1 foot would have created the necessary separation.

I don't think the monochrome version gains anything.

Bendy bridge - interesting, but the crops at either side seem too
tight - I'd be happier if the left stanchion plus a bit more were in
shot to the left, and if the other bridge wasn't running straight
into the frame.

First graffiti pic is fine, suits the wide format.
Hey John. Gotcha on the first two points. I will work on them later today.

The bend on the bridge is due to distortion and being closer to the left bridge. Perhaps if I centered myself better between the two bridges, the output probably would've come out better.

Thanks!

Hi Dez,

How do you feel about turning that red thing on the right side of the
first photo black? That is one big eye grabber. The rest of that
photo is super.

Morris
Do you mean selectively making it "red" in the b&w photo? I thought you weren't (and most) a fan of that.

Thanks :D

My favourithe is the one of the bridge, I love the soft colors there.
But all are very good.

Renato.
Thank you Renato. As you can see it was a very cloudy day and a snow storm was headed my way, so I played around with the colors there to make the photo pop.

Nice series Dez, love #1 and 3. The stitching has come out perfect. I haven't tried a lot of panorama yet, but seeing these shots, certainly wants to make me go for it. The exposure looks perfect. I'm just curious. How long did it take you to shoot 14 frames (all with wireless remote and locked focus I assume?)

Again, beautiful series, looking forward to your next!

Dez,

I love your work! I too live in NYC (Bronx) and would love to take panorama's of the NYC skyline and bridges, etc. What lens(es) did you use for those pics? What is your favorite walk-around lens for NYC street shots? Thanks!

Faints and collapses on the floor. I'm sure well find something for a virtual arm wrestle at a later date!

I quite like the distortion, it makes you look twice and gets away from being the familiar view - its the abrupt crop I'm not sure about, just a little more on both sides to hold the two bridges in shot rather than straying to the edges.

However, it is always interesting to see how distortions alter with different viewpoints.

Hey Jay. I like the "boogie-down" Bronx.

I used the Nikkor 17-55mm lens. It's my favorite, everyday and lens and very sharp....but expensive!

Hey, Im in a good mood today ;) I made $900 in gigs this week....

So you say, remove the land references on both ends? I kinda like it like that!

Naa - I'm saying extend it at both ends, a case of more is more in this case. I want to see where the bridges start and finish!

Perhaps when I revisit that area again. There's not much left on both ends.

Thank you Roel. Panoramas are relatively easy provided you follow proper procedure, use the same exposure & white balance and you stay level by hand or tripod. I used PTGui or you could use PhotoShop CS3's Photo Merge tool.

No remote or tripod. This was done during the day so I had enough light at f/4, 1/400sec, ISO 200. It took me less than 2 minutes maybe?

I see you work with the D300 and D80 as well. I was about to pull the trigger on the D80 when I realized for just $35 more I could buy the Canon 30D, which seems to be a different class of camera. This will be my first DSLR. What's your take?

Btw, what do you think of the Tokina 12-24? Ever shoot with it? Do you have a favorite prime?

Thanks!

I used to own the D80. I am just with the D300, which I rather like :D

I wouldn't go with the Canon 30D. They have the 40D right now and it's a much better camera.

You should try both the Canon 40D and the Nikon D80 and see which one of the two fits comfortably for you. When you select the body, your selecting a system and have to stick to that one manufacturer.s lenses in that system. I chose Nikon due to the features that the D80 had back when it was introduced. I than followed with the Nikon lenses.

The Tokina 12-24mm is a favorite in these forums. I've read it's pretty sharp and well built compared to the Nikkor offering. I am looking to either add a Tokina 12-24mm or Nikkor 12-24mm to my bad.

I'd like to get something wider than my favorite Nikkor 17-55mm lens.

Thanks Dez! The 40D is too rich for my blood right now. I still have to buy lenses, printer, memory, etc.

Jay, this will be an expensive hobby no matter which way you look at it.

Select the system that best suits you. Price the cameras and bodies of both and try them at B&H in Manhattan. They let you demo whichever body and lens you desire.

Thanks Dez. Yes, I've been to B&H and have handled both the 30D and D80. Would you recommend buying a camera from there or saving money and buying from Amazon and other internet merchants? I'll be buying about $2000 worth of equipment so I could save a lot on tax alone if I buy over the internet.
