I set this up (on a budget and first attempt at "studio" type set up) with a black back ground and my sb 600 off camera to the left and natural light from a window the right. I am a little biased to how this looks since its my son... but I wanted your opinions.
D300 w/50mm 1.8
f4.5
ISO 320
SB600

Thanks for looking

I like both images.
Image #2 may have a bit too much light across his face.

I would like to see a small light on the floor behind lighting up the part of the background just behind his head. I believe it would add some depth.

The color versions must be nice as well.

Thanks for the comments. The color ones were nice. These were straight out of the camera. I shot them in Monochrome mode. I also took some in color but like the black and white ones the best.
You can see the color ones at

2321 is fantastic, smiling at each other. Shows their personalities.

I would still like to see that back light for a little 'seapartion' and depth.

I will try that next time, what type of light do you use. I have seen the results of this type of lighting but never actually seen the setup or type of light.

Very nice photo ( and kid ). I took the liberty of applying a little
Levels, added a bit of contrast with USM, and a touch of Sepia.

Thanks, it looks great. I have one that I did some PP on but for some reason Flickr didnt like the format it was in or something because it wouldnt up load.....
Thanks

Nice shots! The only thing that bothers me is the dark shirt in #1. He looks like a head with no body :)

Great photos! I like the contrast, sharpness (I'm thinking of buying a 50mm and the 1.8 seems great!), and the dark background. I would crop the first photo from the right to make it a square.

By the way, I suppose you are aware of the off camera forum Strobist? You might find yourself hankering after a few more flash guns, though lots can be done with one flash plus reflectors.

Awesome shot! (the first one). the only thing I'd change would be the crop.. I'd crop tighter (less space above the head) and shift the kid slightly (just a hair) to the right, so that he's not "perfectly centered". LOVE the b&W !

Thanks, I did the crop, but was unable to upload it to Flickr for some reason. I will have to mess with that again tonight. and see what I can do.

Thanks for the comments.

I don't have the SB 600, but I thought the head rotation was the same. I find with my 800 into a brolly that the 800 is barely enough power, but the price differerence between the two is considerable. Ken Rockwell, bless his little cotton socks, has this to say:

The head rotates down -7 degrees past parallel I think that is the only difference in rotation.
