HeLP!!!! Forum Issue

Hi Mikal:

This forum is set up in such a way that it is quite intrusive to you web surfing privacy. You have to enable your browser to accept all kinds of cookies and advertisements to enjoy all the functions of this forum.

In your case, I believe you have some kind of web privacy software installed to protect your computer. You have to enable "pop up/ pop under advertisement" of your privacy protection software to be able to see the replies.

You only live once ,and always suck the lemon.

Wrong.
Wrong.
Wrong.

Sigh.

The forums are optimized to make the most of your system cache, reduce bandwidth usage and ensure the fastest possible loading times.

To achieve this the forum message and thread list are loaded separately by your browser. The message itself (read.asp) can be cached by your browser almost indefinetly because it won't change. The thread list is 'loaded' by the message page as a dynamic javascript file, that's because the thread list IS the thing which changes.

Some 'stupid' ad blocking programs (which you shouldn't be using anyway if you cared about this site) THINK that these thread list javascript files are actually ads and simply block them. You use this kind of software, you lose usage of the forums.

As far as cookies - There are a couple of cookies to memorize the last time you visited the forums, to enable the 'NEW' markers. Another cookie which remembers your identity (if you select that option in your profile). There are other 'session only' cookies for the news headlines...

A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing.

hehe...which is exactly why I never posted my reply to Mikal here right after he left the original message...I emaild him this:

Hi Mikal...

I had the same problem....Are you running a popup ad Killer like AdSubtract or the ad killer in ZoneAlarm? If so, disable it or customize it for dpreview.com, then exit your browser and restart it and go back to dpreview...should be ok now.

Please let me know how this works out.

Loren

That said, I do appreciate the elaboration by Phil; I knew it was due to ad blocking, but I didn't know the details...thanx Phil!

Ah, I love the power/knowledge of the manager!

BTW, we should all do our part and click on these ads.

Friends:

I'd just side with others (not just Phil!) who point out that if we want to continue to enjoy free access to this site (vs. monthly sub fee), we should, minimally, be viewing ads (no ad-blocking software) and, where it makes sense, patronizing those advertisers.

With the bottom having fallen out of the ad market -- especially the online ad market -- it's got to be tougher than ever to attract them.

Phil, one thought: With all the posts on here about Sears' price-matching policies and new customers using them, I'm amazed Sears hasn't signed on for banner position on splash page!! :) You've probably done more to help them sell to the kinds of folks who can afford digital photography as a hobby than their countless Sunday newspaper flyers!! :) Hehehe...

Pop-Up stopper should be ok, but those ad blockers which look for embedded javascript files will fail.

You're welcome to block pop-up's here because we don't run them.

But don't forget to click and buy things from our affiliates every once in a while! We're not a charity :)
I'm using PanicWare Pop-Up Stopper, but I have no trouble reading
posts.
