Ok, If you could only choose one lens, what would it be and why?

Well, I was just pointing out that it's longer then the 800...and
still auto-focus is a bonus. If it's "you can only have one lens"
it'd be not only longer than the 800, but also more
versatile....assuming you have it mounted on a turret in a Hummer.
I think the 800 without extenders would be just about perfect. Fast and long and probably the ultimate sharpness. Thats assuming it follows the 500f4 and 600f4 in IQ. This lens is also lighter than the 600f4 and just slightly longer than a 500f4.

The 800 will AF with a 1.4x, so its what, 1120 f8?

If it was an interior or architectural job then just my TSE24

If I was working in a bar taking some shots of a band, then 24-70

Apart from the made up situation of limiting me to one lens because my house is on fire and I want some shots, I generally take 2-3 on a job...

...come to think of it, in the situation above, I grabbed my 1Ds and it had a 16-35 on it. It was the only possession I grabbed whilst getting out of the house. I got some great shots of the firemen charging in, and smoke billowing from windows :-) I was even asked to move out of the way by one fireman :-)
(all was OK but the kitchen was burnt out)

Easy Question,

Right now I cant go anywhere without my 35 1.4. If i could only live with one lens I would without any hesitation choose this one.

So many reasons why; Fast, Sharp, Small. It is my favorite focal length so that also helps. But overall i feel comfortable with this lens.

thats the only one giving me all the pictures from a single lens system. I would pick the superzoom against a P&S because it still gets better IQ / noise than a P&S

In real life, it doesnt work as simple. I have 3 fast primes (30mm, 50mm and 150mm macro) in addition to that zoom to make things work for me

Why? 'Cause Canon made that lens for me, and no one else. If other people like it, or don't, that's just fine. Just remember -- it's my custom lens. : )

That said, I really love the 24 / 1.4L as well, and I could not do without it:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1029&message=26773972

And the 100 / 2, yeah, that's a little gem:

But sometimes you just need a macro, and the Sigma 150 / 2.8 macro really puts out:

Shoot, then there's the 16-35 / 2.8L which still pains me that I had to give up to fund the 24 / 1.4L:

You know what? Now that I think about it, it's the 5D. Everything is just so damned good on that camera! : )

as this is the only lens that can take up to 5x magnification. Most lenses photograph what the eye can see, the MPE65 takes what the eye can not!

Kind regards

A 5D with 28-300L IS sounds nice, (or even a 1Ds III) but I guess we should consider budget restrictions.

When limited to only one lens there is no need to even consider a dslr. I'm pretty sure a Fuji S100fs with 28-400 equivalent lens and 11MP would not be so bad. Not entirely dslr quality, but at least just one lens and a lot of zoom.

When I bought my DRebel/300D 4 years ago I thought I could get away with a single lens and then just have the equivalent of a superzoom P&S but with better image quality. I got a Sigma 18-125 when it first came out (equivalent to 28-200 which was popular in cameras like the Sony 828, Minolta A2, ...) and I hoped to avoid dust on the sensor this way and I hoped for great image quality. I got neither. The best image quality requires more than one lens, and dust is just unavoidable.

Slowly learning to use the DRebel (only around 32.000 shots) and now also the Fuji E900 and Canon G6.
Public pictures at http://debra.zenfolio.com/ .

Ideal focal length on my XTi. Fast, with good contrast.

It it was socially acceptable to walk onto any performance stage to get good close-ups of performers, I'd be tempted to dump all other lenses, and keep the Sigma.

the 24-70mm f2.8/L on the 5D. That goes for me, but the 1Ds crowd could also make that one sparkle.

I think I'd go for the Canon L 10-800mm f1.2 mk II with IS.

Now that's the REAL deal. And quite versatile too...

My favourit, the good old 49-51mm 1.4 , ideal range from slight wide to slight zoom (on FF that is), lightweight, and not expensive.

no one has one yet....

(drat!....you beat me to it...)

--------------

I am really curious to see some evaluations and use of this lens.

I suppose there will be a lot of folks cutting back to a 1-car family..to get it
and not because of fuel costs...

It consistently improves my photography ;) Seriously though, this is a lens with very few flaws and an abundance of character. I like it better than the "L"s
