Can anyone tell me what the flagship 'A' series model was before the A650IS was released? I want to see if there's any bargains to be had before I shell out for an A650IS.

Thanks

you're probably going to pay more for it then you would for the newer A650. Prices on the A640 went up to original sticker price at some places as the A640 became very popular all over again after the A650 was released.

I looked, trust me. A similar thing happened with the G7 right after the G9 was released. People dissapointed in the G9's specs were going out and investing in the older G7 which helped keep the price of the G7 higher then the G9, at least for a while anyway.

The cheapest I have found the A640 recently, and probably one of the few places that actually may still even have it in stock is Best Buy for Business - http://www.bestbuybusiness.com/bbfb/en/US/adirect/bestbuy?cmd=catProductDetail&showAddButton=true&productID=BB10670333

Good luck to you!

You can actually purchase the A650 for a little less at several dealers on line. The A650 has several improvements in it that make the A640 less attractive to me. You would be better off with the A650 for the same or less cost.

The predecessors to the A650 were the A610, 620, 630, and 640.... all fine models. However the A650 was a major upgrade when it added a 6X lens with IS and a higher res LCD.

Agreed - for the price diff the A650 makes sense over the A640. The A650 is a good priced deal right now some places (second to the S3IS in value IMO) The A650 has been a bit of a 'sleeper' since the G9 has 'stolen the thunder' of the 12MP Canon clan. But in reality the A650 does alot of things well and with a hugely versatle vari-angle LCD and AA batteries. Of the 3 camera's (A650,G7,G9) I prefer the G7 and the A650 is a close second for me. I won't go into the reasons why out of fairness to the OP's original question... Matt

A630 is better than A640 IMHO, because it has 8 Meg sensor. I bought one recently in Office Depot at bargain price.
