I was looking at buying a Sony Digital camera. Its was so cheap compared to the competition, especially in what features it had to offer. I then added up the cost of accessories (ie case, MEMORY STICK, etc) and the total cost of the Sony was MUCH more than what the competitors had to offer with the same number of accessories.

I am going to talk with my dollars AND NOT BUY SONY PRODUCTS that require accessories.

BOO TO SONY AND EXPENSIVE MEMORY STICKS!

Sony have done their research and know that cheap cameras with expensive memory sticks will make them money in the long term. We know better now.

serpeant: By golly, it appears that you have indeed done your reseach. If you're successful in getting the price of the memory stick lowered, let us know. G

I bought a Lexar 128MB about 3 months ago. I paid$ 59.95 and there was a $15.00 rebate at the time. It works flawlessly and to tell the truth I don't see any problem with memory sticks. I haven't checked the prices of the other media cards but I know the sticks have dropped in price the last year, and are more in line with the other media cards. More products are starting to show up that use memory sticks and I believe they will be around for a long time.
I would not let that sway my mind if I was considering a Sony product.
Sorry I can't complain.

Nice reply. I wish they were cheaper also. This would have been a more genuine complaint before the price drops back in Feb. Now 2 x 128 sticks can be purchased for 120 where as a comparable 256mg CF runs 99. So the disparity isnt nearly as large as it used to be.

  • fastest data-write times
  • robust (you can drop it or carry it in your pocket)
  • versatile (usable in digicams, mp3players etc)
  • small
(-)
  • expensive
  • can be used only in sony devices (but maybe there already is a non-sony device for MS)
  • can be easily lost (small :))
  • 128MB max (256 & 512 this year, 1gb the next year or even sooner)

Not very long time ago Sony has lowered the licensing fees for using MS technology in devices of other producers. One of the first is ACER using it in their PalmOS PDA and other should follow. I hope :)

This should lower the price a bit further and maybe even make SONY to invest more to R&D and funaly come out with higher capacities MS.
Maybe we can even see the changes this year

Do you like the camera? Do you want the camera?

If yes to both of those, then get the camera, and enjoy. Purchase the memory that makes your camera go, and complain about something more substantial like the cost of barrels of oil or global warming. :)

Have fun taking pitchas.

I agree. If you like the camera and its features, get the camera. The only Sony accessories you will probably need is memory stick, extra battery ($50), and the remote control ($50). The battery is the about the same cost as other digital camera lit-ion batteries. The other acccessories like tripod, lenses, flash unit, etc. don't have to be Sony.

Besides, how many sticks does one need to buy? I'm sure it depends upon situational needs, but if we're talking about only two or three sticks, the cost differential is not a deal-breaker here.

Hi Serpeant,

You might want to consider the plus side of a Sony. The battery system they use is head and shoulders above any other manufacturer. No other company comes even close to it. It tells you how much time is left down to the minutes and it is accurate. I purchased a spare battery just to be safe and have yet to use it.

my two cents: I could care less what the accessories cost, I wanted a Sony camera. I completely agree wtih Harvey that there are upsides, and the first one IS that battery. I also bought an extra and have not used it.

The day I bought my camera (3rd Sony) I also bought a 128 stick. It was $129 and I happily paid it. The next day it was advertized at $89 so I was happy to get a little money back, but that did not factor into my purchase in any way. Maybe it's not for everyone but it was well worth my money.

Same here. I never had to use my extra battery. When I goto national parks, I would be shooting 440-500 shots in a day and the battery still has about 30-40 minutes on the indicator at the end of the day.

I have two 128s and that's enough for me for now. They cost 69.99 each (at Sears for original Sonys - on sale). That's not much, but I dread the day I take the camera to disney with my kids. I would either have to buy a notebook first, or spend $500 in memory sticks. (Since each stick only holds like 8 to 10 Tiffs)

Yehuda ,

Did you get a email confirmation after you sent in your rebate? See if you can track it from http://www.rebateshq.com

They at first made a mistake on my co-worker's, since I ordered two, one for him and one for myself, so his receipt had the same PO # as mine. Without looking at the quantity, they dis-qualified his (limit one per household). He call to square things out w/them and finally he got his. I finally got mine & my husband's (using my mom's address) two wks ago. What a long wait!!!
Great. I didn't. No more Lexar products will enter my home.
