Thanks for the tips. So, taking portraits at a reasonable distance (a number of meters away) with the widest aperture (which I think is 6.3 at anything past about 70mm isn't it) with the background as distant as possible. OK, I'll give that a go.

From my review of the Sony 18-250, I went ahead and made a scale I thought would be helpful on the review (I do this on all reviews now):

Aperture to focal length range- f 3.5 to 24mm, f-4 to 35mm, f-4.5 to 55mm, f-5 to 75mm, f-5.6 to 150mm, and f6.3 to 250mm

And it all depends on how you want your image to look.

Id use a more wide open aperture than 6.3 personally, I like f4.5 at 55mm or something.
