This last Saturday Eric C of Oklahoma was working in Austin Texas (I got him a Texas passport) and we managed to meet up in the Hill Country for a great fun day of roaming around some sites I often visit but are new to an Oklahoma alien. We had a great day! If you ever have a chance to meet with a Pentaxian, do it!, they are great people!
Where we are from and where we met up.

Met up at the world famous Coopers BBQ Headquarters-They ship all over the world and if you ever had any you would know why!

Lots of choices here

My giant pork chop is gone...

I think Eric was full!

We passed Enchanted Rock, lots of people were out on it.

We crossed some Hill Country streams...

Some nice views up high

Dang it! Eric blew the highlights in old Rupert's hair!

Old Rupert did a better job, I'd say.

Down in the Medina valley, lots of streams and Cypress trees.

Let's get some chicken and go home!

The rest are here, we had a great time, I used my Tammy 18-250 the whole day and was pretty well satisfied. A better shooter would have been thrilled I do believe! http://www.pbase.com/rupertdog/llano_texas&page=all
Thanks for looking!!

It looks like a fun time. It has been over 10 years since I have been in this part ofthe county. I need to come back down to the hill region. There are some good caves there, plus pretty countryside.

Thanks for posting the photos.

Dave

Looks like you had fun.

Meet ups are indeed good fun, I try to plan them in wheneever I travel somewhere...

We were a few meeting up in Copenhagen this weekend too...

Doing the processing the photos right now in fact:)

Boy, sure looks like you Texans are into your health food. What did Festus think of the barbeque, or was he a little intimidated by it?

I haven't traveled as much as I'd like to but one area I want to see is the American Southwest. Arizona, New Mexico, Four Corners, etc. I've seen pics of some truly wonderful country. Gonna see it one day soon. I guess you're not that much farther east.

Too many subjects, not enough time...

If you do get out West, try to make it here, it is a truly magnificent place.

I haven't had texan butcher paper barbecue since I did my graduate studies in College Station and Canyon TX. I guess I need to head down I-35 from Ames and get me some. All we got up here is KC style.

Well, you need to come on back, you probably miss the Dixie Chicken too. Coopers has the best BBQ in the world according to HW Bush, and I'm sure no Republican but I agree with him there, so it must be something special....and it is!

That was great fun Rupert. I'd like some of that nice pork roast and some chicken too. Good barbecue is one of the finer things in life. :-) Thanks for sharing Jim.

Any San Diego Pentax shooters want to meet up with me? Anybody visiting San Diego? Let me know, I'd love to have a Pentax meet up.

Hi Rupert!

Sounds like a fantastic time! Can smell the BBQ from all the way over here on the East Coast. Gotta love it. Man is my stomach growling from your wonderful photos.

Glad you and Eric are finding time to wander around together!

If you are wondering why conversations have been civil and everyone is so serious, it's because I've been away from DPR for 2 weeks, working on a contract. As Jim mentioned, we met in Llano (pron. Lan-no, not Yawn-o) and drove thru the hill country for a few hours. The lighting was horrid, but you can't beat a day in February where you can drive in a Jeep with the windows down.

Here's yours truly shooting the free range cattle near Enchanted Rock.

Hey Rupert, don't you know only mad dogs and bad photographers go out in the heat of the day? Especially when it's Texas Heat...

The Knot in the Loop - a bar in Willow City, TX. If you've never heard of Willow City, you'll need to break out a magnifying glass with your map, because it will be in the small letters.

Somewhere south of Kerrville, TX on SH16. Every mile or two, the road crosses some small creek with a bunch of cypress trees.

The Guadalupe River meanders its way through the Hill Country. Most of the bridges are just concrete embankments that the water flows over and under.

I can definitely attest to Jim's description. It's a kind of beauty you don't see elsewhere in the country. I'll be going back again, if not this spring when the flowers are blooming, then next year. If you have the time, fly into San Antonio or Austin and spend the weekend exploring.

Even if the Salt Lick makes better barbeque.

Yep nice to see faces to match with names ... even better to get a piece of that BBQ!!! :-) I hoping in Sydney this year they do Wallerawang again .... think I'll make seperate post ...

That looks delicious. When I was doing my flying training in San Antonio, my instructor suggested one day we fly up to Llano for the best bbq around. We did and headed in to Cooper's in a car borrowed from the airport fbo. Simply the BEST bbq I've had to date and your picture brought back good memories of that one visit. Loved the pics of my home state.

Those are some pretty good shots......where are the bottlecaps? You have got to be happy with the 16-45, this was a good comparison with the Tammy I used and it is obvious to me that the 16-45 is much better for landscape. Nice trip, I enjoyed it, and wish I had some of that BBQ right now. BTW-Don't compare the BBQ at Coopers to some joint in Okla that smokes their beef with treated lumber. More of this and I will ask our famous Gov, Mr Rick, to pull your passport.
Take care- Rupert

They didn't really turn out, but I haven't dug deep into those shots. I got home and I'm now working on the stuff I said I'll get to "next week". I'll see if I can make a recovery there.

The Salt Lick BBQ is in Driftwood, TX. Southwest of Austin about 30 miles.

We don't do bbq in Oklahoma. We cut the testicles off a bull, slice 'em up, roll em in breading, and deep fry them. Don't go coming north of the Red River unless you are up to eating mountain oysters.

Eric, et al,

I remember, back in 2001, myself and two of my retired buddies did a self-contained bike ride from Port Aransas to the Oklahoma line, and spent one night at the fairgrounds in Llano. Bailed out too early in the morning to partake of Cooper's, but always wanted to get some of that stuff. There is also a nice little BBQ place in Bandera. The Hill Country is beautiful, especially in the spring, when the bluebonnets are out. We are all from Tulsa, and I am the lone K10D shooter in the midst of Canon and Nikon shooters. Don't get no respect!!

If you guys are ever in the Tulsa area, please send an email, or give me a call. It's in the book on South Maplewood. I need some help in responding to these C & N naysayers, and would love to share some Pentax lore.

Mike.
