Should I sell a couple of my Olys for the F707?

Hi, folks.

I have very generous family members. I own the following Olympus cameras: C-2100 UZ ('UZI' for two months), E100RS ('EZI' for three WEEKS), the D-40 Zoom (since Xmas 2001), and the D460 Z. These were ALL gifts, all bought brand spanking new, and obviously not used all that much!

I sort of feel like owning the UZI and the EZI are a little bit redundant, and think I should get rid of one of them. I'm thinking of trading up at least the UZI or the EZI and my D460 zoom. and then, when there is a sale, coughing up the difference and buying the Sony F-707. I will not give up the D-40 Z. The 460Z takes gorgeous photos, but I just don't need it anymore, since I have the four megapixel and EXCELLENT D-40 zoom. Those little clamshell cameras are the best for carrying with you at all times, just in case... I am definitely keeping the D-40 Zoom. I will not give up that little gem just yet. I know that many of you out there own both the UZI and the EZI, and from what I've read here and there those that do own both cameras would probably give up the UZI, despite the slight difference in megapixels.

Anyone care to suggest what they would do? I thought I'd keep the UZI before the EZI, but I have to tell you that for taking photos of sports, moving animals, birds, etc., that EZI can't be beat, and I am truly hard pressed to see any noticable difference in identical shots taken with the two cameras. Now, for the Sony F707. Every photo I have seen is pretty darn impressive! I will mention (why I don't know) that ergonomically, the F707 STILL does not feel as comfortable in my hands as the UZI and EZI. It was noticeably lense/barrel heavy! Nor does it have 10X zoom. Am I driving myself nuts here? Yes. Absolutely. I find it hard to believe that Olympus will come out with anymore 10X optical zoom lenses, considering they lost the license to Canon for that. I already have some great cameras. Maybe I should ride the wave and just wait until something REALLY mind blowing comes along! The F707's price is right too. I can't afford the SLRs. They are just too much money for me! That Sony is nice, despite the fact that I feel like a TRAITOR, LOL.

Any input would be REALLY appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Willa,

Let me give you my $.02. I have all three of the cameras you mentioned (C2100UZ, E-100RS and F707) and unless you really have a burning desire for the additional resolution of the F707, my suggestion would be to save your money for a Canon D60. The F707 is a fine little camera - it tends to somewhat oversaturate reds and has the same basic red/green chromatic aberration in the periphery (on the left side primarily). Of course you can print pretty large images because of the added resolution, but the 10X zoom of the UZI actually makes up the difference and then some at full zoom.

Best regards,

Lin

Judging by your name, your generous relative must be God. ;-) What a nice predicament. If you shoot a lot of sports, I'd hang on to the E100RS. Otherwise, I'd keep the UZi.

I may not be a camera expert or anything, I haven't even seen a real live F707, but I know what's right and what's not.

What's not right is to sell any of your current cameras. Why? They're worth more to you right now than whatever cash you will be getting for them by selling them.

I'd keep them all. Lend them out to people if need be, but I'd keep them.

Think about it this way: You sell your 2100 for 200$. You eat out once or twice, watch a movie and soon your camera is gone.

If you keep the camera you'll have a lovely 10x 2mpixel camera.
And you'll have a nice 1mpixel zoom for your pocket.

And stuff.

My advice is to keep everything.

Hi, Lin.

Thanks so much for your response! I will hold on to what I have. Oh, and while I have you here, can I ask another question? I just got the A-200 because I couldn't find the B-300, and doing the Ebay thing for me personally is NOT fun. Anyway, I was surprised to read in the instructions that I should not use any filter with the A-200. I don't understand this. Does a circular polarizer cause distortion or something when one's using a converter lens? Do I have a clue as to what I'm doing? No! LOL. Thanks again for you help, and I hope you don't mind me asking this question.

Hi Willa,

There is no reason why you can't use a filter if there are threads on the A-200. There is no reason why you couldn't use a circular polarizer or UV filter with the combination. I'm not certain why they would recommend "not" using one - but there are plenty of examples where they are being used quite successfully.

OK, Lin, I am going to read the paper work that came with the camera again. When I took it out of the box I already had the A200 attached, but I took it off. I mean, I did buy this thing to take distant shots. Thanks, as usual, for your helpful, intelligent input.

Hi Willa,
Oh yeah, You'll keep everything for a while allright, For a short while.

It's inevitable that you will change your mind. The hype will get to you. You will read all the coming posts about how "fabulous" this new camera is and how "stunning" this one is ,how"impressive" the print quality is from this camera etc. Yes all the fancy adjectives the new buyers use will make you pee your pants and make you sweat as you lie in bed at night dreaming of that shiny new model.

It's the American way. You need something better than what you have. And you won't have to wait either. Go for it now! You can always take the money from the grocery budget. We fat, spoiled, and lazy Americans eat to much anyway. Yes, One way or another you will get that new camera. It's the American thing to do. Thats what we have credit cards for. And if the Visa is full just get a Discover card. if you play it right you can charge the whole thing and pay no interest for up to 9 months maybe.

Or maybe ,just maybe you will do the sensible thing and keep what you have. Either way you'll have fun.
good luck, John

not feel as comfortable in my hands as the UZI and EZI. It was
noticeably lense/barrel heavy! Nor does it have 10X zoom. Am I
driving myself nuts here? Yes. Absolutely. I find it hard to
believe that Olympus will come out with anymore 10X optical zoom
lenses, considering they lost the license to Canon for that. I
already have some great cameras. Maybe I should ride the wave and
just wait until something REALLY mind blowing comes along! The
F707's price is right too. I can't afford the SLRs. They are
just too much money for me! That Sony is nice, despite the fact
that I feel like a TRAITOR, LOL.

Any input would be REALLY appreciated.

Thanks.

John,

The question I posed was really a hypothetical. Speak for yourself! While I agree that Americans tend to be materialistic, these cameras were gifts to me, and I am a bit overwhelmed! I was thinking I'd incorporate what I had into ONE. Way too many people wrote me and told me that the F707 was not worth trading in my new Olys. That's what these forums are for, no?

As it turns out, after reading the posts from some very knowledgeable people, I am keeping what I have. I've had three POTDs with the cameras I have now, and I've owned none of them more than six months, so I am doing OK with these cameras, considering this stuff is all new to me. Maybe you or someone else you know would mortgage the house to buy a camera, I wouldn't. However, I'm not stupid, and I know that if I were to trade up my Olys I'd break out even (money-wise, anyway) buying the F707. Again, I'm keeping my fabulous cameras for now. Calm down, dude!

I may not be a camera expert or anything, I haven't even seen a
real live F707, but I know what's right and what's not.

What's not right is to sell any of your current cameras. Why?
They're worth more to you right now than whatever cash you will be
getting for them by selling them.

I'd keep them all. Lend them out to people if need be, but I'd keep
them.

Think about it this way: You sell your 2100 for 200$. You eat out
once or twice, watch a movie and soon your camera is gone.

If you keep the camera you'll have a lovely 10x 2mpixel camera.
And you'll have a nice 1mpixel zoom for your pocket.

And stuff.

My advice is to keep everything.

No, I distinctly told everyone, "No more cameras"! It's a long story...

Hi, folks.
I have very generous family members. I own the following Olympus
cameras: C-2100 UZ ('UZI' for two months), E100RS ('EZI' for three
WEEKS), the D-40 Zoom (since Xmas 2001), and the D460 Z. These
were ALL gifts, all bought brand spanking new, and obviously not
used all that much!

I sort of feel like owning the UZI and the EZI are a little bit
redundant, and think I should get rid of one of them. I'm thinking
of trading up at least the UZI or the EZI and my D460 zoom. and
then, when there is a sale, coughing up the difference and buying
the Sony F-707. I will not give up the D-40 Z. The 460Z takes
gorgeous photos, but I just don't need it anymore, since I have the
four megapixel and EXCELLENT D-40 zoom. Those little clamshell
cameras are the best for carrying with you at all times, just in
case... I am definitely keeping the D-40 Zoom. I will not give
up that little gem just yet. I know that many of you out there own
both the UZI and the EZI, and from what I've read here and there
those that do own both cameras would probably give up the UZI,
despite the slight difference in megapixels.

Anyone care to suggest what they would do? I thought I'd keep the
UZI before the EZI, but I have to tell you that for taking photos
of sports, moving animals, birds, etc., that EZI can't be beat, and
I am truly hard pressed to see any noticable difference in
identical shots taken with the two cameras. Now, for the Sony
F707. Every photo I have seen is pretty darn impressive! I will
mention (why I don't know) that ergonomically, the F707 STILL does

Well, that is a tempting suggestion, but I'm afraid my photographic skills aren't deserving of a dSLR just yet. And when I do get rid of my cameras, maybe I will just GIVE them away! What goes around, comes around, you know! :)

Hell, drop a few well placed hints in the general vacinity of those
generous family members & get the 707 next Christmas or
birthday...LOL...
Better yet after the well placed hints have been placed. Get them
to pool thier generosity & chip in to get you that Nikon or Cannon
dSLR you can't afford....LOL
