I have a 5D, 40D and 1D Mark III and would like some suggestions for wireless triggers up to 300-400 feet for both the shutter and/or the flash. I've seen several advertised in the photo magazines but they don't go into much detail. I assume you need two unless they come as a set. Also, my cameras "go to sleep" after about 2 minutes, so the trigger would have to "wake up" the camera, focus and make the photo.

Thanks for any links and ideas and thoughts.

The Pocket Wizard is rated for 1600 ft. With the "Pre-trigger" cord, you can choose to have it in the On position to eliminate the camera wake time delay time at the expense of the battery life, or to trigger it with the wake up delay. Of course you could also set the camera to never go to sleep.

Thanks for the reply Nelson and all of the replies to the forum. I looked at your web site and you have some beautiful photos. Nova Scotia is on my travel list. I'm from Atlanta and have been to Moab, Yosemite, Rocky Mtn NP, Yellowstone, Eastern Sierras and Lake Tahoe. I love the western US. We're going to Glacier this summer.

I have acouple of questions about the Pocket Wizard. I assume you need a minimum of two--- one the send and one to receive. How about using the Pocket Wizard and an external flash (Canon 580)? Do you need a 3rd one for an external flash?

Thanks, Kent

Hi Kent,

Thank you for the kind words. You will love Nova Scotia.

Yes you need one PW for each device. One to transmit and one on each additional device, flash or camera, that you want to control SEPARATELY. If the flash is to be triggered at the same time as the camera, the flash can be on the hotshoe of the remote camera or via the off camera cord.

It might be probably possible to split the output of a PW into two and trigger two PC cord attached devices at once but I have not tried that.

So the bottom line is that you will need at least 2 PWs to start. If the remote flash is on its own stand and cannot be controlled by the remote camera, you will need a third PW.

Canon makes this but I know nothing about it, maybe somebody that has used one could comment.

It is infrared based and has a range of 300ft. It takes 8 AA batteries. The cost is slightly more than two Pocket Wizards. It cannot be used to trigger remote flashes.

For me, the Pocket Wizard is the clear choice. It has a longer range. It is radio wave based, not infrared based. I don't know how Canon's infrared system can be used reliably outdoor in a sunny day.

With the pre-trigger cord, it costs slightly more (188x2+80) but the combo can be used for studio strobes, flashes and camera bodies from other manufacturers.
