Does anyone own a hotshoe flash?

If so can you give comparisons in some real life situations? Taking pictures of kids from another room with and without the use of flash? Taking pictures in any challenging indoor scenario...

Here are places that I went and had trouble with lighting.

This was at Madison Square Garden at the Knicks game.
I was about 20 rows back, zoomed in and got some pretty nice but noisy shots...
Yes, so I wish I had a DSLR :o(

Looking at the exif file, ISO is in the 800 range and everything above 200 on the S-5 usually shows noise - the higher the ISO the more noise.

Have you tried using a program like Neat Image or the like to reduce the noise? I tried it on your first image and it removed most of the noise.

I just got my Promaster 7500EDF external flash... I'll post picts this eve of my experiments... I know this IS an awesome flash because I borrowed it from a friend a week ago (not to mention it cost 1/2 of the canon speedlight price). It will transform indoor S5 results.

Well I'm off to take picts...

Here is the filtered image using Neat Image. If I were doing this for myself I would then sharpen it in Photoshop/Elements as removing noise usually softens the image somewhat.

If you will email (see my profile), I will email you back a complete flash tutorial that is universal for DSLR's and P&S digicams. Flash has become a big portion of my work and after some lengthy conversations with a professional event photographer and major newspaper photographer years ago, my eyes had been opened.

I have sent out this tutorial to virtually thousands of folks around the world. The email tutorial (complete with samples) is around 5 MB in size. It begins with tips and directions for use with DSLR's and then ends with flash usage with digicams.

This offer is open to anyone else that may want it to improve their flash photography skills. It's a foolproof method, but does take a bit of experimentation. But once you've got it, there's no looking back because it's basically a sure thing in 95% of all situations.

And just to show you the net effects of this method, here are some quick samples from a variety of cameras:
