Is it my imagination...

G'day rapick and all!
Well like you rapick I couldn't resist saying G'day in this thread either!

I would have to say it's 'dead' compared to how we remember it in the 'good old days' and no that doesn't mean we're now so old we can't remember that bad parts of those days! LOL Just that back then a Coolpix was close on God in the digital camera world and we had lots of pros and ex pros here to prove it! :-)
Plus digital was all so new and it was a very exciting time for all!

I guess we're now in the 'good new days' were you can buy a D200 for the price we paid for our trusty 990's and a half decent lens for the same price we paid for our TC-E3ED and WC-E24/63 lenses, not to mention our flash brackets (I mean Magic Brackets ha ha), Extendaviews from Eagle Eye, Sensor Extenders to get past the tele converters, flash cables to hook up our PZ-5000AF, SB-22 or SB-28 flash units... and list goes on...

Wow aren't super nice SLR's so cheap these days! lol

Just would be nice to see the same excitement we all had around here when it was all so new! Was almost like a member of an elite club back then to have one of these new fancy Digital Cameras! :-)

Anyone seen Jarrell around of late, or perhaps Larry Berman, ISO Matrix or Petra (to name just a few)?

The P5000 coolpix and SL-1 ring light can be used to take pictures of jewelry!

What do you think?

Cheers, Bill Creech
Gabe,

Thanks. I took the pictures of the CP5700 and D70 DSLR with my
CoolPix 5000.
I'm impressed. I would have guessed that you used your D80 to take
the pictures, not the 5000.
I used a simple setup using White Foam Core Board, and a set of Day
light balanced Florescent bulbs. Total investment less than $50.
Hmmm. Lighting looked good.
I used the simple setup and my CoolPix 5000 to take pictures of my
wife's collection of pottery and glass art work. Plus I applied FCAS
methods to the picture in post processing. See below. Nice way to
inventory your fine collectibles.
.
--Once again, very well done Bill. I've been here awhile so this is
something I probably shouldn't ask, but what are the FCAS methods?
One of the other things about the forum now is that you don't see
anyone posting this stuff anymore or encouraging it.

Hi everyone,

I have not picked up a camera to do photography since Christmas, and before that it was my retirement party and last day at work on Halloween. Have not looked at any of the photos yet. I did shoot a few test shots now and then to give the cameras some use. Retirement took me in a different direction. I have been working on my kitchen, my recipes, enjoying time with my cats and hubby, planning home remodeling, and the cameras have all been, for the most part, still. I had no desire to shoot any of them. But tonight I took out my D50 and the D70 and am recharging the batteries. The Panny will soon have a new home with my cousin who bought my earlier Panny; a gift. The 8800, 995 and 4500 will come out of hiding and be used once again, and the P5000 and 4300 will accompany me here and there where cameras are not allowed. I have so many pedigreed cameras that as long as even one works, I probably will not be too concerned with any future cameras, and certainly not any future lenses. I bought the cheap but good lenses--all I need.

I don't feel the need to post except to get acquainted with old friends, and to say hi. But I do feel the need to use my Nikons again, and occasionally, my Sony, though I can't say that the little H2 has any advantage over my Nikons or even is needed.

I hope Nikon brings out the camera most people here want. It is a never-ending quest that I hope leads to the Coolpix that Nikon is capable of making, but for now has not. The 995 was more camera than a beginner could ever hope for, and I have a feeling when they made the 4500 and the D70, they made all the cameras I would ever really need, but the 8800 and D50 were icing on the cake, the 8800 being a camera that should have gotten more recognition and less criticism than it did, and the P5000 and 4300 are a handy bit of fun, with the 5700 being that all purpose camera I often took to work and passed around for all to use.

So I am off again with a few ideas and more than enough cameras, hoping to develop my skills to take full advantage of my cameras. And the NTF? It is home to many of us regardless of the number of posts.

I wish you all good photo ops and happy shooting.

The 8800...

Bill Creech's initiative to revive the Foam Core Addicts Society brought me back to the NTF, and it's great to find this gathering of old timers! The hardest part of upgrading to a dslr was leaving this forum behind. It was an awesome place to learn how to use our state-of-the-art Coolpix gear, and to share successful work-arounds with forum-mates. They helped me figure out how to make pics that are among my most treasured, like this FCAS-style fuchsia.

I owe the NTF a debt of gratitude. Thanks to what I learned here, I was able to achieve my dream of progressing from enthusiast to hobbyist to semipro. I was the prime photographer at half a dozen weddings last year, and had lots of family portrait and product photography gigs in between.

There are a number of NTF veterans posting at NikonCafe.com. Jarrell stops in on occasion, but he has a new passion these days. This post explains.

Gabe - heartiest congratulations. Your thread has really started to wake the forum up and your question about FCAS has started that going again. It is great to see some of the old favourites posting again and finally we have UF making a very welcome visit, especially with news of Jarrell.

Many useful comments have been made and I will just add two thoughts. Many of us have been busy, but that is probably not entirely what has stopped us posting. People have stopped posting series of fascinating photos for us to admire and comment on. Many of us were inspired to try new things or improve our efforts and then post the results for C&C. We often got praise and the criticism was always gentle, sincere and so helpful.

All this resulted in the NTF being like a club where friends met and were genuinely interested in what each other were doing. There was always plenty of technical help when needed and if you needed the answer to a problem, you would have a very quick answer. Then, we seemed to drift into a period of so many posters bemoaning the fact that the latest Nikon releases didn't have the features that they personally wanted and so much criticism - much of it sincere - that you begin to feel that no-one will be able to take a photo until every little feature is just the way they want it.

When I first joined the forum at the time of the launch of the 8700, the advice was how to take photos and get round the problems. Of course, we are all entitled to expect better and better eqipment, but the point of the equipment is to take the best photos you can - and not moan about the one that got away.

Let's go back to taking and posting photos and commenting on them and build back that club atmosphere. As UF says, that is how one learns to take photos and make the most of our equipment.

Uncle Frank - what a pleasant surprise to see you on the NTF again. We had a wonderful month in the South West USA last summer though the closest we came to your area on this occasion was Yosemite. What a trip!

I had a quick look at some of your last posts on the "other" forums and was appalled at the level of some of the comments. Yawn was the title. We will always be delighted to see you back here from time to time.

Uncle Frank,

Welcome back to NTF. I hope we can revive FCAS. I appreciate your support trying to get it going again. Your beautiful FCAS Picture should help. Plus your kind words of encouragement. Hopefully a few more NTF veterans will come back and help us.

One of the things I have always enjoyed about NTF and OTF is that they are friendly and helpful places to visit. I hope we can continue that positive attitude.

I try to surf NTF looking for ways to help and answer questions in a positive way following your example and the example set by many other NTF veterans from the past. We have some new NTF members that are doing the same and I appreciate them too being positive and helpful. It helps us all grow our talents and skills.

Alastair, you have probably hit on an important point there. We all need to get back to photography and use what we have. But, regardless, there is a quality to the NTF I never found in the other forums here. It is special with an openness and friendship that draws us back.

Special hi to Uncle Frank and to Ty Young, whose work I studied over and over to learn the basics, and I guess I am not much past there. Uncle Frank, you just do fantastic work. Love your photo. Once not too long ago, I went to your pbase site and studied all the wedding photos you had taken. I am sure not in your league, but last year my D50 with the 35mm f2 and I were at a wedding where the bride could not afford to hire a pro for anything but the actual basic wedding shots, so my candids actually became the rest of the wedding photos. At another wedding, the pro was a real nice guy. He would set up the shot and take his photos and then he would invite the rest of us with cameras to use his same angle. Both pros were using Canon, BTW. Gosh, darn.

To all of you, from Alastair to Gaber to Bill Creech, it is nice to see each of you again.

Hi Alastair. It's funny isn't it. I was really getting bored with the forum because no one was posting or commenting on posts, so I sarcastically started this one...which I thought would be ignored also...or maybe get nasty responses. It's wild how it brought back so many people who spent so many hours here in the past. Bill is certainly to be commended for rekindling interest in FCAS as well. He has been trying very hard to make NTF a success and has been extremely helpful to everyone here.

Well put my man. I've always enjoyed seeing pictures here and have been befuddled by posters who sprout "You're not supposed to post pictures here...go post the on the Samples and Galleries forum!" Ha! The new people aren't posting many pictures like the old crew did....and some of them yell that such and such camera's bad in low light or "I used to take better pictures with my Canon YaYa 578H-12"
When I first joined the forum at the time of the launch of the 8700,
