EVIL camera who will be first? and when?

The Sony Mavica, as illustrated in Michael Langford's Complete Encyclopaedia of Photography published in 1982, looks like an EVIL camera to me. It is shown on page 211, in the section headed Future Design Trends.

Just a guess, but a below a200 sony alpha is a very likely candidate ( however not off the main sensor evil).
  • They had the R1 (EVIL without the IL)
  • they have the fast live view in a300/a350 ( ok, the live view is not off the main sensor)
-they going strongly after the P&S upgrade crowd... it could even be that they just use a LCD and no eye-level viewfinder

for off mainsensor EVIL the limiting thing is read out rate... Anyone knows which is currently the fastest in this respect? Agin Sony has a strong in house sensor department cobvering video as well...

Other candidats:
  • Panasonics their dSLR is not really taking off, so they meight as well try something new.
  • Sigma, just make the dp1 exchangable
( actually a VERY likely candidate)

I'm going to say it's probably going to be Olympus. For three reasons:
1) Olympus seems to be the most innovative of the DSLR manufacturers;
2) Oly has the most experience with Live View; and
3) Oly's optical viewfinders (on their small DSLRs) are not very good.

Hi!

Time to time to time subject of EVIL concept pops up in different
discussions.
So, what do you think who will be the first to offer EVIL cameras?
Some new company or existing player? When it will be?
Yeah . . . it's been a couple of weeks since we had one of these . . .

Look for it to reach the 150 post limit.

I think it will be either Sony, Panasonic, Olympus or perhaps Casio.

Canon and Nikon will sit tight and let those four duke it out until the EVIL is perfected, then they'll ride the wave.

Olympus has not had very good success introducing a new DSLR system. Only a 6% market share.

A new EVIL system will have even less sales success, and manufacturers know that.

In days of film, people couldn't be weaned away from the SLR concept. Contax tried with the G system, but they sold very few cameras.

In a FILM camera the SLR concept makes perfect sense - it's the only way to have a view through the lens in the viewfinder. But in a camera with a Digital sensor and EVF can always give a view through the lens. The mirror is only there because so far optical viewfinders are still that much better than EVFs. But SLR is certainly not the only way to get a through the lens view, so as soon as EVFs get good enough I think we will see an EVIL camera ... in a lot less than 20 years.

The Contax G film camera had a REALLY good optical viewfinder--except when you used the 28mm lens, then the viewfinder only showed you an 80% view.

But IF the EVF is truly 100% optical-equal .... then why wouldn't they ???
