Here are some answers to a few issues:

1. NO Image Stabilization in DP1. 1/25th or below the red warning icon displays

2. Maximum shutter of 1/2000 at f11..and slows down to 1000 as you go to f4. There is a thread on this somewhere.

3. The new 120-400 and 150-500 are not "labeled" EX lenses. The quality is EX quality. The lenses are improved with a new generation of OS. The 150-500 is sharper than the old 50-500 (and probably faster AF as it is not as large a range). The 120-400 is improved over 80-400 in that it incorporates HSM which the old doesn't have. I didn't ask if it was sharper as the 80-400 is a very sharp lens at all focal lengths IMHO.

4. The current policy/thinking is that only constant f-stop lenses will be labeled "EX".

Hope this clarifies things.

Thanks Rick :)

Just to clarify even more ... the new 150-500 is not an direct upgrade of the old 50-500...

I have seen a diagram somewhere showing the internal design of the new lenses to be very similar to the old 80-400 .. which apparently isnt so bad :)

Thanks for the info Rick!

I'm definitely getting a "Junior". EX quality, HSM, OS, Sharper and cheaper than the Bigma :D Although I'd love to have the range of the 50-500, for convenience, it's main use would be telephoto and I think I'll be better served with the Junior.

(Do you have any idea about the Bigma's future? Will it be upgraded with OS, dropped from the line-up or remain unchanged?)

No idea...wouldn't surprise me if both are dropped based upon history. One lacks OS and one lacks HSM. Perhaps some good sales soon!! Still I had the 80-400 in DV this year and it really came in handy...I am a big fan of this lens. i will ask next time I talk to Japan.

This shot is one of my favorites of the DV trip this year..I am probably coke-bottled due to my image preferences. Original size on my 30 inch dell looks great although I know I shouldn't toot my horn.

In summary, I think it is real exciting for those not having long lenses and wanting to get one (or two).

Do I recall correctly you posting some handheld shots (bigma) of a cropduster in flight several years ago? That was really neat.
Perhaps some good sales soon!!
I'm going to keep an eye on the german sites.

Was thinking about getting a cheap Bigma from Sigma4less, which would run me about 650 euro, but if it gets picked out by customs (most USPS packages don't) the import taxes will negate the low price.

Interesting times indeed ;)

Rick, I'm not sure what is happening but this shot also has the same strange posterisation in the sky as that dp1 shot. As in that there the red channel is somehow not good. Maybe a problem with your monitor set-up/calibration? Have a look into it, the shots are to nice to have such 'problems'.

I'd say your were stovepiped ;-)
It's an excellent image, but it's showing some more of that funky red channel posterization in the sky showing as purple haze near the cloud edges. As this is the SD14 and not the DP1, it must be the processing. If you are using a new SPP on these images, then you might need to report this.

too much listening to people I shouldn't be listening to and playing around with the blue color in the sky. The unaltered dp1 shot has gone up to Sigma and should be changed in a day or so. Looks like I will stay away from those "easy sky fixes" that people have mentioned. I do appreciate your pointing that out and will redo the image.

Well, we all make mistakes and have lapses - just look at my "post processing" expertise in cloud management! And L is no exception. I know he was very involved with the prints at PMA and was not with me at the time I had the discussion with Sigma about whether IS was in the camera or not.

L has been promoting the idea of a compact since one of the early users meetings, was the first one to do so and was somewhat of a visionary in this respect. So he deserves some thanks for the idea.

Anyway it is cleared up now. I am very anxious to see the camera released and to see how it is received by both Sigma users and non-Sigma users.

Now if we could just get a compact with interchangeable lenses, I would sell a lot of my 35mm gear!!

Thanks, Rick, for all.

Very good to see Laurence recognised for what he does, off the forum.

Regards to both,
Clive

4. The current policy/thinking is that only constant f-stop lenses

10-20mm, 12-24mm 50-500mm have no constant f-stop and are EX lenses.
So will they lose by this policy the EX tag?
Or what is really the difference between EX and non EX?

The only Information I found is on Sigma site, which is stating Superior build quality for EX lenses...

you probably missed my dry sense of humour, I should have included a smiley, but my comment was typed while I was chuckling....I know LM does a lot behind the scenes and its good to know he's like the rest of us and prone to the odd lapse.
