transfer pictures from my Uzi to a computer with no USB port ??

Thanx in advance

SanDisk is one of the many brands of card readers that you can use to transfer photos from the SmartMedia card to the PC without attaching anything to your camera. Most readers in use are for USB ports (lots less hassle in using USB), but I know that SanDisk has one specifically for PC parallel ports. The following link for the various driver downloads shows that their parallel SmartMedia reader model number is SDDR-19. I'm guessing that other manufacturers also have readers for parallel ports. I don't know where you can purchase them, but a little internet research will probably turn up some vendors.

...and since you don't have a USB port, I'd guess that you have an older PC. Find and check the minimum system requirements carefully for any card reader that you may find, as well as the system requirements for any photo editing software that you might find attractive.

In addition to the Parallel adapter that was already mentioned, you could also use a "flashpath" adapter to read the SM card from a floppy drive (slow but functional). Or, if you have a laptop, just get a SM to PC card (PCMCIA) adapter and read the cards as if they were a second hard drive (very fast!). As a final option, you could always pick up a serial cable from Olympus and do your transfers the old fashioned way. HOWEVER, it will take about 2 1/2 hours for a 128MB card!!! So don't forget to stop by Blockbuster before starting the download. ; )

Good luck!

Thanx Yogi & Robert, but I was thinking on the lines of getting a wire, since the camera has a serial connection - or am I mistaken ? I don't care too much if the transfer is slow. It's just a temporary thing. I need to transfer pcitures onto my Aunt's computer, but it doesn't have a USB.
Thanx

You could get a serial cable for it, any Olympus or Nikon serial cable will work with it through camedia software

The other option is a parallel port card reader. Which is many times faster than serial. It'll take a half hour to download 64MB through serial.

Then, why don't you just go to Kinko's or some place like that and rent a computer for a short period of in-store use. After you are done, email the pictures accross to your Aunt's computer.

I used my UZi with the serial cable from my 2020 with no problem. I usually use my parallel SM reader, but at the time I forgot to plug it in so I downloaded the pictures the old fashion way. Honestly, you should get an external parallel port reader. Downloading large images over the serial port is very slow.

I believe this is the cable you need (though I have not used it personally). From the picture, the serial connection looks like a 9 pin connector. You may need a 9-> 25 pin connector, depending on what type of serial ports your computer has.

They better have DSL or CABLE...try downloading 64meg over dial up..

better to have them copy from smart media burn to CDR (hopefully your aunt had a cdrom drive)

For a note book computer I would suggest using some thing like this

MR FLASH SMART MEDIA SMARTMEDIA ADAPTER PCMCIA

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=list&catalog=91&DEPA=1

For a desk top something like this works well

ADD-ON~2 PORT USB PCI CARD CHPDual

If she has win98 or above, the easiest thing to do would be to put
a usb port card in the computer and be done with it. $15.
Brian, that sounds like a great idea, will it work for a laptop,
can u give me further details ? Thanx ..

I believe it just requires a driver. It should be compatible with win95 on up and probably win3.1.
