I was pretty apprehensive about geting my CP990 after all (and continuing) problem reports. I've had it a couple of weeks now and can't find a damned thing wrong with it. Basically, I'm taking pictures - and they're coming out real good - rather than running lab tests. I haven't found any stuck pixels, haven't had to reboot (drop the batteries) or anything else. Got the X2 tele-exender and it's great.

If we were to take a survey ... people with prolblems complain loudly, with justification - maybe 20-40 people? The rest of us (maybe 5-10+k) just use and enjoy the camera.

Advice? Just buy the camera from a reputable place so you can exchange it if necessary. Even Lexus has problems - ask my wife.

Ya know, I bought a Nikon F FTN Photomic, vintage 1969, in 1979. I still have it. I didn't take it home and 'lab test' it. I just took great pictures (comments from others).

Bottom line: I love the 990 (had a 950). It works and works well.--Arnie

Arnie, yeah...good points. I've got to wonder about the lens cap/stuck pixels tests because I imagine the camera's pushing the ISO and making strange things happen. It's sorta hard to take a nice photo with the lens cap on, isn't it? If the problems don't arise in real photographs, why worry? Personally, I'm more interested in seeing everyone's photos than discussing the speed benefits of Lexar CF cards ad. infinitum.

Arnie, and others...

I felt the same as you when I decided to get the 990; ie: all kinds of problems.
I've had mine three+ weeks now, almost 500 pics and everything is going great!

Only thing that is a problem sometimes, is I want to take it everywhere I go! Might miss a good shot, ya know....

One of the reasons I got a Nikon is, I've had a Nikon SLR since the later '60's and never had a problem with it. Never used a camera bag either. I don't intend to use a bag for the 990 either. I think it's made tough enough to withstand plenty of use.

So far, I haven't found any difference in quality between XGA/fine and VGA/fine. I know the pictures are half the size using VGA. If I know in advance I'll need to "crop" the picture, I'll use XGA instead.

I'm busy and happy shooting pictures!! You?

arnie,

I've got the Nikon F with the FTN finder(1970), Nikkormat FTN(1972), Nikon One Shot(1994), Nikon N90(1997), Nikon N50(1998) and now the Nikon 990(May 2000). I still have all of these cameras. 12 lens for the slr's. Accessories by the camera bag full. The one constant about all of the Nikon gear. It works the first time, and it keeps on working for years. Every camera has a story behind it. They have all been a part of my history. They are something that I depend on to work when I need them. The only problem that one of my Nikons has ever given me is when my daughter took one to the beach. Had it cleaned, I'm still using it. There may be some early production problems with the 990, but a lot of the reported problems almost seem to be something people are going out of their way to find. It seems that new test are being invented to produce a problem that cause no loss to photographic values. I am looking forward to using my 990 tommorrow, and the years to come.
