Just about to purchase some more CF cards to use in my D2x. Currently use 2Gb Ultra II (Sandisk).

Was looking at getting larger cards, but have been unable to check or find a list of tested cards.

Intend to stick to Sandisk, thinking of Extreme III. 4G, 8G. have seen 64Gb advertised. Has anybody used any of these larger cards in a D2x?

What are people using?? Was thinking of buying the largest I could afford (64G), however after reading other posts thought it maybe wise to stick to 4 or 8G and a few more cards (loss or data loss etc).

Thanks,

Tim

I am extremely happy with the Sandisk Extreme IV 8GB cards that I used in my D2X and now use in my D3. I personally wouldn't use bigger than 8GB as there is too much to lose, and the Extreme IV cards are plenty fast.

I use the 8gig San Disk Extreme Ducati edition. Its the fastest out there (45 MB/s read & write) and it gives me a few more jpegs in a burst (about 8) over others in my D3. Pay more from a known supply as phoney cards are all over some look very good.

I recommend the Extreme III 4 or 8GB cards for the D2X.
You won't see any improvement in write speed on the D2X with the Extreme IVs.

If you have a D3 or D300, the Extreme IVs are worth the extra cost, as these cameras will write MUCH faster to them.

What do you mean by "too much to lose" ?

If you lose 8 GB, that's OK? But, losing 16 GB is unacceptable?

I think I'm missing your point.

People have been cautioning against larger cards ever since the choices were 1MB, 2MB & 4MB! I've been shooting on CF cards for over 10 years and, while I've had some corruption, I've always been able to retrieve all my photos. I will always feel confident in getting "one step down" from the "newest thing" no matter how many gigs/terabytes they get to be.

I'm in the camp that says the less you're swapping out cards during an event, the less likely you are to lose data, as in, losing the whole card! I'd much rather shoot a wedding with a 16GB card in each camera and never have to remove the cards until i get home :)

How much data to have at risk is ultimately a personal choice. It's like choosing how much insurance to buy; different people will have different needs and preferences. CF cards do occasionally get corrupted. So yes there are choices to be made. Usually there is some corelation between having lost data and being concerned about losing data. If you have never lost files, then you probably aren't very concerned about that.

Since I haven't bought a new CF card in a while, I've been using the Ridata 8Gb 150x and they have been very reliable and speed has never been much of an issue as I rarely shoot in burst mode. Those hold about 400 RAW files and that is quite a bit. Rarely do I ever shoot more than that amount of shots in a day, so going bigger doesn't interest me that much. I'd rather have a handful of 8 Gb cards.

Another factor to consider is how to download those cards. I use the portable hard drive back up units (Persoanl Storage Devices or PSD's) when further afield or away from my laptop. Even the faster PSD's ones will take a while to download 16 Gb of data. My older unit chokes on the 8Gb cards and arbitarily stops at different points. My laptop has never done that. Part of my criteria is in how long it takes to stop and backup the CF card so that there are 2 copies of important shots. The earlier that I have two copies the happier I am. If you have an assistant at a wedding shoot to copy cards to a laptop that is a different scenario that doing it yourself.

Just my 2 cents & Cheers,

No, I think you get my point and want to be pedantic about it. I do not want to lose 16GB worth of data. 8GB is as far as I intend to go on card sizes.

I assume you are now getting my point.
