sony dsc-p9 availability??

Does anyone know when the p9 is expected to be at stores?
Not sure when in the USA, but it could be in may?

It is already available in Tokyo (74,800 yen, or 585 USD) and Hong Kong
(4990 hkd, or 650 USD). I think it will be 600 USD in states..

see hong kong - sony site

I have seen it in stores, and I think it is an awesome portable camera.. The only issue is that I think it is a little expensive for a portable camera, when I could get a Canon S40 for $550, which has manual controls and good image quality...

the p9 is much more portable than the S40....with a better LCD..
can't decide P9 or S40.....

I'm actually trying to choose between the same 2.
thanks for the links!

So was I... but then I read about the Minolta DiMage F100 which seems to have the functionality advantages of the Canon plus the size and portability advantages of the Sony... except it uses a lousy storage medium... and is not out until 'late Spring 2002', whenever that is! Do you think it will be a contender??

I am also interested in the p9 and the canon s40. Top Gun you wrote that you have seen it in stores...where? I've been to my local Best Buy/Circuit City and neither have it and the sales people didn't even know about it.

The p9 doesn't have the carl zeiss lens (from what I can tell) does this matter??

Hello,

I am trying to get some specification for a new sony camera dsc-p2, in comparison to dsc-p9. It's seem to me that the difference only in 2mp in dsc-p2 vs. 4mp in dsc-p9, which makes the first camera very attractive, taking into account that even now it's already 200e cheaper (in europe) than p9 (almost the same price as canon ixus 330 (powershot s330)! -- the other 2mp ultra compact camera that I am considering).

However, on the european sony web-site is written that p-9 has a "Carl Zeiss" lenses in contrast to p-2. Is that true? Dpreview mentioned that "..the Sony lenses aren't as good as the "Carl Zeiss" lenses.." from which follows that it is not.. Does anybody have any of these cameras?

Any information regarding these cameras is highly appreciated.

None of Sony's P series ever had Carl Zeiss lenses and I don't think they ever will. This series is for the point and shoot category and they are leaving Carl Zeiss for their other categories like the DSC-S or DSC-F line.

That website is wrong and they probably just copied the same info from they DSC-S 75 or 85 specs.

I don't think we can say anything about the Minolta until it comes out. Minolta seems to be mixed as far as image quality goes. Since this is Minolta's first camera of its type I wouldn't expect as much as Sony or Canon.

As for the Canon, I don't think the S40 compares well with the Sony DSC-P9. While they're the same shape and almost the same size, the P9 is 7.2 oz with batteries and the S40 is 11.4 oz. Sony's S85 is 15.7 oz. So the S40 is really in-between those two models.
So was I... but then I read about the Minolta DiMage F100 which
