Moeraki Boulders

Adrienne and Hugh,

It's interesting that both of you pointed out that you liked the light in the photo. When we arrived at the beach, the sun had just risen and was coming from the ocean direction. Being on the beach, looking out at the ocean, the boulders were to some extent silhouetted against the sun. But it wasn't a complete silhouette.

I instinctively thought that the light must be better on the other side of the boulders (the side facing the ocean). The tide looked like it was quite low and there was a small patch of sand between the boulders and the ocean which I thought afforded me sufficient space to go out there to take the photo.

As I sized up the shot, composed etc.. and halfway through taking the shot, I could hear a wave coming in and before I knew it, I was ankle deep in water !

But it was worth it, as this is my favourite photo out of the whole trip ! :)

Extremely beautiful shot! I love the light and this place has great memories for me - 22 years ago our daughter was born near this place! We visited for the first time since we left a month ago but clearly the weather on our day there was not as nice as yours! Here's one of our views.

Great shot Jon ! Very dramatic - I like it. It's amazing how the different lighting conditions can cast the photo in a different light or to set a different mood.
