Any recommendation for internal CD Burner?

Plextor is the one that's most recommended as far as I've heard. By my own personal experience, though, I've owned a Ricoh internal, and I now have a Pioneer DVD-R/RW, and they both work fine.

Generally, for what components are available out there, I check out the Ars Technica system guide ( http://arstechnica.com/guide/system/index.html ). The God Box in and of itself is always worth a look.

Hi......I, too, am new to this and have been doing research since getting some tips on this forum.

Many good things were said about "Plextor" being the best, so I went directly there http://www.plextor.com and spent most of the morning checking out their products and also the reviews....these reviews were well worth looking at since they were done by independent reviewers, the detail is incredible! I am pretty well sold on the newest one, the Plextor 40x12x40......everything I read about it looked terrific.
You will learn a lot there....Good luck...

I would check out the reviews and in depth testing done on http://www.cdrlabs.com

The Plextor does well, but not well enough to justify 2x the price of other models... My personal recommendation is still the 36x12x48 CyberDrive. It can be had for ONLY $60 + shipping (you can get it delivered for $70 total at http://www.newegg.com ) While the Plextor's lowest price is $135+ with shipping.

Check the reviews of the two drives, check their write/read times, etc.

Whew......my head is spinning......have been going over reviews alllllll day! (rainy day outside) Then I went back to check out the CyberDrive.......whew.......it sounds pretty darn good, too. Thanks Maxwell.......I'll have to give it more thought and examine the reviews more, too. Appreciate your input.

Problem is...when it comes to what to purchase, the CyberDrive at 36x is listed even on that link at $63 and the Lite-On is $99 for the cheapest... In my opinion I don't think that $36 (more than 50% more cost) is worth a measely 4x faster burn speed.... There will be little to no real-life differences between the two. So save the $$, put it towards some good CDs and all the better.

Now, if it was 36x at $63 and 40x at $70...it might be a closer comparision....but that's just not the way it goes.
Check the comparison list:

I am brand new to this, so anything is better than what I know now.

Thanks a bunch.

Lucy: I have Plextor, I pay a little more, but the Plextor 24/10/40 and the 40/12/40 are two of the few burners out there that will copy CDs successfully because of their ability with regular bit patterns. If you like to archive your CDs, in addition to backing up your images, this is the machine for you. I have had other burners that had great specifications, but when it came down to it they just did not perform, or malfunctioned. The Plextor (SANYO) burn-proof technology (now in version II) is just the best out there..IMHO.

$135 is cheep for a CDRW machine! I paid a little over $500 for my very first Toshiba SCSI 2x reader!

Dennis,

I also paid quite a bit for my first SCSI JVC 2x... :)

Actually the Burn-Proof technology they use is all their own which is a good reason to check the reviews to see if it is questionable...For instance, SANYO uses FlexSS-BP to prevent bad burns while Plextor uses PowerRec to do the same...both are similiar, but different.

Here's a quote from a review about the CyberDrive's BurnProof Technology:

"The usual tests like hitting Control-Alt-Delete and then escape, defragging a hard drive, and doing other CPU and I/O intensive tasks while writing could not even phase the drive."

I agree that Plextor makes a good product, don't get me wrong. But I do not believe that we keep CD Burners around long enough anymore for it to be much of an issue. If you make an informed decision when purchasing and just make sure to avoid the 'lemons', I think you're okay going a different route.

After the JVC I went Yamaha and wouldn't budge any different...as well as keep the system SCSI...old habits die hard...Now IDE drives are just as reliable as the SCSIs, yet less expensive...The choice at this point was easy for me. :)

Just remember to check independent reviewers and make sure you feel they are thoroughly testing the capabilities of the drive... http://www.cdrlabs.com is a good on IMO...
