ZF 2/28 first shots

Thanks for pictures, especially of the Belgian brew. (though, I'm not a fan of the taste Orval). Great-looking subject and thanks for all of the closeups. We're all curious about how this lens stacks up to the Nikon primes in that range.

You should try the Leffe.

The lens does magic in your hands my friend. Your site is a testament to that. As for the lens, well, I am hoping to try it out very soon when the local dealer gets one in - maybe even this week. I have the 25/2.8 and really enjoy using it on the d3.

cheers

Thanks for your kind comments. The 25mm is an amazing lens too. It focuses really close like a macro-lens. You'll have fun with both lenses on your D3. They (ZF & D3) seem to be made for each other.

The Nikkor's a nice lens, and I'm keeping it when I receive my
pre-ordered Zeiss 28/2 ZF from B&H. That said, the rendering,
contrast, sharpness, and tonal rendition on the above Zeiss samples
that I already own and use reveal the wishful thinking and childlike
ignorance of your post.
Talk is cheap. If you have both, post some samples from each.

Paul,

Thanks for viewing.

Your shots with various ZF lenses posted on this forum have been very inspiring to me.

Kind regards,

Hans

Not to hijack your thread (I have posted those pics in another thread already) but I just want to show some samples from my 28mm 2.0, made with extension ring (K1) on a d200:

I paid $200 on eBay, from the serial number it is one of the last made: december 2005. It used to cost $995 in 2005 now you can have them for $215 at keh.com.

How can one see such small differences in sharpness between lenses when all files coming off a DSLR are blured by the AA filter? Corner sharpness, Ca, boca contrast I can understand. Seems to me to properly review a lenses sharpness we would need to use a DSLR with the AA filter removed.

Well said. It is funny, our setup is really similar: D2X, Zeiss 100mm, and the 3800. One question: why would you say the ZF 85/1.4 is "not in the same league"? Which "league" are you talking about? From what I've seen and read, both the Nikon 85/1.4 and the Zeiss 85/1.4 have their place.

Thomas
I own and use a mint Nikon 28/2, and I've used many examples of that
great lens over the years. The Zeiss ZF 35/2, 25/2.8, 50/2 Makro and
100/2 Makro all put that little Nikkor AIS in its proper place- a
really excellent pro level lens without the truly amazing 'snap' of
many of the Zeiss ZF lenses. The Zeiss ZF 50 1.4 and the ZF 85 1.4,
both of which I also own (along with the AIS and AF versions of their
Nikkor counterparts), are not in the same league, IMO, with the rest
of the presently ZF line. Whether the ZF 28/2 is as good as the best
ZFs already out there remains to be seen.

There is no way you can tell from the posted 28/2 Zeiss pics whether
it's better than your precious 'lil Nikkor 28/2 AIS. On the other
hand, I use the 35/2, 100/2, 50/2 and 25/2.8 Zeiss lenses above
back-to-back with my Nikkor 28/2 on my D2X all the time; NEFS from
all of them wind up on my calibrated screen and pop out the Epson
3800 for clients daily.

You do not have any idea how good Cosina/Japan/Zeiss optics really are.

But you DO know that your Nikkor is better, right?

Why lets the facts get in the way of your 'argument'?

Nice pictures and they look very sharp. I like wide-angle 'macro-shots'. How close can you focus the Nikkor without the extension ring?

The prices for both (new) are very similar. But the Nikkor is not available new and the Zeiss is not available second hand.

What advice have I given here that you think I can follow?

I don't have both lenses, and I'm not stupid enough to take someone at their word that one lens is better than another. Sure the Zeiss may be sharper, but the samples I've seen from other Zeiss lenses have bad colored spectral highlights all over the place- and the owners of the lenses often seem blissfully unaware. I am not suggesting that the Zeiss isn't "better", I just want to see for myself whether it is better in ways that would make it a good purchase for me.
