Well I have got to you, I am not a happy camper. Just bought a Canon s9000, yesterday. Printed with different papers, tried all of the different settings, printed about 20 8x10's. Not one print was the same, vertical bands on all of them, some worse then others. Not one print was acceptable.

I left the Epson family, because of the clogged head problems always needing to clean. Was hoping that the s9000 was my solution, guess not. Got the printer boxed up, ready to take back, but what to get!!!!! Try another s9000, or go back to Epson. Sure does get frustrating.

If not a simple cleaning problem, did you consider that perhaps you just have a bad head? Have you called Canon about it? The Canon's don't seem to be generally known for visible banding problems.

But I can understand the frustration of trying to get satisfying prints. Hope that something works out for you soon.

your frustration is understandable, especially when you fork out over $400 on something. Did you get it local or mail order? If you got it local get it replaced. Never hurts to try a 2nd time

Bob,

I just got the S9000 at CompUSA yesterday and got the 2 year CompUSA warranty on it for $50 (included a USB cable and cheap copier paper).

Got it home, set it up, did an alignment, and started printing beautiful pictures from the get go, on different types of media, and even on Kodak after everyone whines about Kodak on the Canons. I just happened to have a lot of that paper laying around from an old printer that died (lexmark).

If where you bought it will do an exchange, try it, what do you have to lose except a few bucks in gas driving back to the store?

If you ordered it somewhere, call Canon Tech Support and have them send you a new print head, it's under warranty for a year and user replaceable (remember, you put it in when you set up the printer).

JMHO.

That makes a huge difference. If it is not aligned correctly you will get bad banding.

Chuck,

I did the the head alignment process two seperate times, also cleaned the heads a number of times, but with the same results. One more thing, I noticed that when the printer was printing, it made some weird noises, nothing loud, kind of like a whoosh., real differant noise then an Epson.

For all of you who use OSX, the current Canon printer driver does allow you to check ink levels through the software, you must pull each cartridge to check ink level. Called Canon support and they said sorry, but that is the way it is. Don't understand, as both Epson and HP have this working in OSX

Anyway, since I bought it at CompUsa, think I will exchange it for another S9000 today and see what the out come will be.

Just to be sure, as it isn't really mentioned in Canon's instructions... When you enter the number for the "best" patch on the test print, you want to pick the one that looks MOST FILLED IN -- i.e. no visible bands. On my printer, the "0" and "-1" were about the same, so I picked the "-1" for all of my colors.

Before you return it, I'm sure that you have done the obvious and tried at least a couple of sheets of Canon Photo Paper Pro! Several have been in your shoes over the past week or so but have found by using the PPP or maybe missing one little setting has prevented them from returning the printer and in turn they are happy campers.

Had the same problem when I made the first couple of prints. I then, in the printer setup menu, check the manual adjustment box, click on the Set radio button and in the menu that comes up, check the enable ICM box.

This change got rid of the banding problems for me and the images have been absolutely stunning since that noted change.

Hope this helps.

I believe that Epson advises empty ink cartridges using the number of copies the cartridges have printed. This is not very specific. Sells a lot of replacement ink cartridges before their time. Canon uses a prism on the bottom of their cartridge to identify out of ink conditions. Mac OS X will advise you when the ink supply is exhausted and the printer will stop printing until you change the empty cartridge but will not advise of a low ink content. Mac OS 9.2 will advise a low ink content if you use background printing.

Bob,

I have no doubt that you got a bad printer. I have had my S820 for about 3 weeks now and it printed exceptional pictures right out of the box on all kinds of media. Exchange it for another S9000 -- that printer can't be beat.

Try another my first s800 did the same thing, the replacement has now made about 500 prints and the only errors have been mine. I also have an s9000 that only bands when I forget to change the paper settings.

It's not loud at all. That whoosh noise is music to my ears. The S9000 is the quietest printer I've heard in my life hands down. And it prints SOOO nice, and is SOOO fast.

-Wondering how this turned out for you, did you return your print I bought the s900 and have yet to see prints that are worth the expense, and I have really spent lots of time
on this, it shouldn't be this difficult.
