Is it necessary to have the Nikon program in your startup in order to download pics? For some reason the software that comes with the camera really bogs down my windows 98se. Just so I can vent...let me say the Nikon software sucks!!! I feel like I have been on line with Nikon for the entire last month. However how wonderful to have an actual customer service number to call.

Not sure about possibilities in Win98, but with the new WinXP you don't have to use that Nikon program to transfer the picture files from your camera.

I suggest you upgrade to WinXP cause it's much more stable than Win98 and supports digital camera connections directly.

Chloe,

From one 885 Win 98SE user to another

Forget the Nikon Software ...

0./ It really is with Win 98SE

1./ It is not needed (buy a CF reader - the Microtech ZIO! is excellent)

2./ Buy Thumbs+ software (brilliant way of indexing all your downloads)

3./ Use Thumbs+ for image adjustment.

Above solves all the problems

With Win98se I have NkVwMon.exe in startup - every time I connect the camera via USB Nikonview starts.

It doesnt cause any perceptible grief on my machine, however I have previously run the software manually - remove NkVwmon.exe from the startup group and when you connect the camera start nikonview manually.

Despite the reservations of others I find Nikonview useful.

I would caution against upgrading to XP unless you are willing to face possible hardware upgrades as well. If your machine came with 98SE installed some components may not be up to the requirements of XP.

(Luddite policy possibly but if it ain't broke don't fix it)

Yes, WinXP may cause upgrade problems with some older hardware devices that are generally over 2 years old. The support for XP is pretty good nowadays though but it's good to check before upgrading if all your devices connected to the PC have XP support.

You don't need to upgrade to Windows XP to be able to utilize your camera and the USB port. Just plug your camera into the USB port and go into Windows Explorer and the camera will appear as a "Removeable Drive". Just use "drop and drag" to copy pictures to your computer. Works great everytime - I have Windows 98 (se). As a side note, I have found that background software that Nikonview loads effect defragging.

No. I noticed some problems related to having the nikon SW running all the time too, so I removed those programs entirely.

When you connect the camera to the usb port, the compactflash card appears as a removable drive (look in "your computer", or "this computer" or whatever it is called in the english version of windows). Just remember to choose "eject" before shutting the camera off.
