David Davies - I've bought a P880 off Ebay, sold as used of course but seems to have had little or no real use. The internal memory was full of what appear to be amateur test shots, dated 3 years ago. Camera was selected to internal memory and it came with no card. I'm wondering if there is some way I can check the number of pics it's taken as I could on my DX6340? I'm waiting for a 2GB Ultra 11 SD card. Have got a dock from Kodak but came with wrong battery in the kit, would have been nice to have a spare, chasing it up. Looked briefly through the mini Users Guide, dear oh dear, I'm going to be asking for a load of feedback I'm afraid.

Congrats on your purchase.

I guess, if you put in a SD card and take a shot, the camera should continous with the number it left off.

Sounds like you may have a virtually new one then David

Hmmmm now this thing with the number of shots...there is some confusion, but I think when you put in your SD card, it will folder with the prefix 100_xxxx, wher xxxx seems to be the number of shots fired, but there is some debate over this, some claim that when the cam has done 9999 it rolls over to 101_xxxx, but I am not so sure

If the cam has had little use and the folder is 100_xxxx, I "think you can assume that that is how many it has done

Batteries are easily available on E-bay dirt cheap, and I have had no problems with them

I really hope its a good one David, turn off the continuous AF as that will stop the focus hunting around all the time, shoot off half a dozen shots at various focal lengths and if its focusing OK...your in business
I bought one with a duff AF....but I think thats very rare
It is almost certainly going to be OK... great stuff

The P880 numbering system is odd. I just took a pic without the SD card and it says 000_0092. BTW just hit the info button while reviewing the Pic in the camera and this will show in the upper left; no need to use a computer. I took one with the SD card in the P880 and it shows 100_7986. So I have taken 92 pics without the card in the P880. And I have taken 7986 pics with the card in the P880. The last four digits show the number of pics taken.

However after 100_9999 it will go to 101_0000, but if you format the card in the camera it will go back to 100_0000. So there is a limit of 9999 that the P880 will track. If I understand things right myself. Anyways it appears you have like new P880 so congratulations on your purchase and enjoy and post pics.

David Davies - Thanks James for your info on review and hit info button. Glory be, it reads 100 0196.JPG. And the date on his internal memory pics shows this not used in three years. And I'm some forty of that number playing around with it. Thanks Vaughan, AF is on lock. Now about to download the update firmware for the camera of 1.02 but will wait before tranfer to camera while I think about it and to see if you come back with any warnings.

So far I've heard of any bad thing about the V1.02 which mine 880 came with.

Highly recommended to install it.

Firmware upgrade is good...you cam will benefit from doing it...improves AF and a few other things, sounds like you got lucky there David

We had a conversation here recently where it was suggested that nobody should pay much for a P880...I totally disagree, if yours has really only done a couple of hundred shots then you have a little gem on your hands, even an entry DSLR (D40) will cost at least £300, so I would argue that your cam is worth £200 to sombody as keen on the P880 as me....nice one

when you get your card, format it and download/install the 1.02 firmware. It will make the camera perform better.

As far as How many pictures were previously taken? I cannot imagine why anyone would care! There is no mechanical shutter to wear out: The chips (Electronics) and sensor do not wear out! In spite of previous posts the on/off switch will not wear out unless you spend most of your remaining life turning it on.off.on..off......

The only thing that wears is stuff that can be and usually is abused, like banging the lens on a sidewalk, or pouring saltwater on the camera, or leaving it in hot sun in a hot car in the summer, or throwing it that wild pig that is chasing you accross the field.

enjoy your new camera.

David Davies - Thanks all for your input. Just nice to know that it hasn't had hard wear and maybe a little abuse. Have never left a camera in sunlight and take great care of them. The DX6340 was my in car camera in case of need in an accident or that sudden photo op., left it in once overnight when the temp dropped to just above freezing, took an hour next to my chest before it worked properly.

There is a mechanical shutter--shutterless consumer digicams are quite unheard of. If you turn off the 880's shutter sound effect you can hear it (barely) when shooting. I presume it's a leaf shutter within the lens itself, but don't know for certain, as I've never seen one torn down.

--Rick
Are you sure there is no mechanical shutter. The Mike Baird used to
say that mechanicals are quite common in our cameras.

I was wrong

yes, it has a wee little mechanical shutter, probably a twin leaf, but non-the-less these have improved over the years and I believe they all have a MTBF of over 50,000 cycles. More than I can click. Years ago, when I repaired cameras, the leaf shutters would get grease on them from the gear train and jam, but today there is no gear train that has grease, and the material is better thus they all work better and last longer ... like the little battery bunny. By the way, most all photographers have dropped a camera or two once or more. I once dropped a Nikon 4 ft to the concrete and only got a burr on the focus mech. Took the lens (a 1,199.00 zoom) apart and cleaned up the ring and it still works fine to this day. Those Nikon lenses were and are tough little buggers. i did keep the strap around my neck more after though.

thanks, for keeping me awake.

From a P880 post back in Nov 2007 from Val (Artisto) at Kodak.

"I've checked the engineering documentation for the information on shutter life and unfortunately that information is confidential so I can't divulge that number. I can tell you that I have known people to exceed the 50k actuations mark and continue to shoot with no problems.

David Davies - Thanks everyone, now have 1.02 on board though had difficulty with getting it in and had to use a work around by downloading that dreaded ES. ES now gone and will give the cam a try on Sunday to check out.

David, I remember a time ago that you did wonders with scenic shots that you use to post here. With the wide angle of the P880 you will even do better.
Looking forward in seeing them here.
