Will there ever be a D300 and D3 review

As much as I like piling on to these posts, consider this:

1. I can wait

2. Reviews have little bearing on my purchases - they often simply reinforce a decision already made. Or in the case with Nikon I have no other choice than switch.

3. The writer may just have better things to do. Priorities, family or personal factors may be involved. At least the camera doesn't have to be Fedexed back to Nikon in 48 hrs.

4. Real world reviews such a Bjorn may have more worth than the very extensive lab type write-ups found here.

5. Do you really believe reviews that tell you the Camera of the Year D70 viewfinder is "excellent"? And you better buy real quick before they stop making any more BGLOD units?

6. Ken Rockwell is always right so what's the problem?

7. By the time the DPR shows up Nikon will have shaved the early adopter price a few hundred bucks, closer to what it's actually worth. Look at all the money indecision is saving you. And look how much longer your warranty is now.

8. You could just wait three years and buy the Fuji version.

9. Look at all the new professional DX primes Nikon has released in the meantime.

10. You get what you pay for. Maybe the review is only available to subscribers.

10.5 Don't you believe Pop Photo's review? These people have been in business over 50 years.

There's your top 10.5 - With reference to point 1 & 2 I'll get mine when the grass is green so I don't have to use photoshop to make people happy. But by then I guess according to the forums the D300s will be out with the Sony FF 24MP chip LOL.

All I can afford is a (old) half-frame from Thailand.

Still it would be disappointing if longer term reviews keep coming
out so far behind the other reviewers.
I think the only other review site that goes to the same or close to the same depth as Phil is Imaging Resource. They just published the final version of the D300 review on 02/06/08, so, unless Phil waits another couple of weeks, he will not be very far behind. There are not too many reviewers who do the amount of testing that DP Review and Imaging Resource do.

Maybe they both ran into some issue they were checking out before releasing the reviews...

You are very correct..the ultimate test is always going to be your own criteria in terms of whetehr the camera meets your needs and personal prefernces. I'm sure that most people see your point:

But I think we shouldn't overlook the fact that maufacturers gear themsleves up specifically to gain good press about a product during the launch phase.

A positive report and good PR is worth far more than any paid ad in a magazine because it generally provides much more detail and it is supposedly a third-party opinion of the product; there is the suggestion that this gives the information more credibility than ad-speak.

Mind you, these days many so-called "product reviews" are little more than extracts from a media release provided the manufacturer or a syndicated report from a freelance source.

Nevertheless, whether you are selling cars, computers, cameras or clocks...the ubiquitous 'Product Review' is a very necessary and highly useful part of a successful launch campaign.

Let's remember that a product review is not a substitute for hands-on assessment: it's not designed to convince us to buy at all costs. Rather, at the very least, it provides the sort of information that will help us to decide whether or not we want to put the product on our shopping list of options in the first place - it helps us to be somewhat more objective when we make the decision to visit the store and try the product, it helps us form meaningful questions about the product so that we are not simply led by smooth talking sales rhetoric.

Canon EOS 5D, 24-105 L, 70-300 IS USM, 430 EX

You'd be hard pressed to consider this a comprtehensive review...more a product description, really, that describes camera features and inclusions. I couldn;t find anythng conclusive on performance, strengths, weaknesses and so on.

I enjoy coming to this site and the reviews from Phil.

It does seem strange, however, that whereas the Canon 40D was
announced on 20 August 2007 and reviewed in October the D3 and D300
announced just 3 days later on 23 August 2007 still have no review.

I would have persnally thought that these 2 cameras are significasnt
enough to merit full reviews and Phil's much appreciated side by side
comparisons.

I'm not normally a betting man but who thinks there is a greater than
50:50 chance of reviews coming out by the end of February?

But imaging resource did not hold back info as they had it. They gave out their review as it developed, while DPreview has been devoid of any useful info by comparison. IR is now the best review site for DSLRs period.

Their attitude is both professional and generous when it comes to their website and any info.

Looks like it's good I'm not a betting man. Even the extra day (29th) hasn't produced anything.

Thanks everyone for your comments.

For all of you who ask this question daily. What would you do if it
was never reviewed?
I'm going to have to send mine back because Phil hasn't reviewed it yet....

Not. :)
Sorry for this post but this is just getting silly. WE may need "
Camera Reviews Anonymous"
I agree, quite silly. I can't believe how people whine about what Phil should do or not do. Maybe the ones complaining should write the review for us and then we can all complain about THEIR review.

While I don't care when the review comes out myself I do think people saying that because you don't pay for it then you should no expectations of the site is not fair either. As someone pointed out earlier this site earned it's money because of the patronage of it by the viewers, sites with very high traffic can earn money in advertising deals, as such you by coming to this site are earning them revenue through your traffic, even more if you actually click on the advertising links directly.

Amazon brought this for a reason and the high volume of it's patronage is one I am sure as well as the quality of Phil's reviews (one follows the other, good reviews people come to the site, a community starts up and so on)

Hopefully once DPreview has a full quota of staff all trained up and ready to go the reviews will come out a bit faster so they can compete with other online and print publications.

Regards

Tatsuki
