Hello everyone,
I am really wanting a new Canon 40d.
However, the best prices I find are not necessarily the best vendors.
Would you purchase from an eBay power seller vendor?

I know I'm happy with the place I got my 40D.

Stellhorn Photo was able to get the hard to find 40D specialty kit. (40D/17-85 IS, Canon Camera Bag and extra battery) Nice kit with a better lens then the old 28-135 plus you get an extra batt and a large case.
Nice people to deal with and free ground shipping.

they are in Ft Wayne, IN. 260-489-2935. They did have a waiting list last I heard but I don't think it was too long.

Actually the best price I've seen is from one of the best online vendors out there. Newegg has the body for only $1,099.99. After that I'd go to B&H, they have it for $1,149.00.

If you want to be able to return the camera for whatever reason, you will need to do some homework. Many vendors including the ones mentioned will only take a product back in exchange for another. Some have more liberal exchange policies than others, too.

As much as I like NewEgg, their return policies on digital cameras keeps me from buying one from them even though I've never returned a digital camera. Paying a little more for some extra consumer protection is worth it to me. That may boil down to nothing more than peace of mind, but at least it's there.

Canoga Camera is an excellent dealer with very competitive pricing.

They are very customer oriented and know how to take good care of their customers. (I have been a customer of Canoga Camera for more than 34 years.)

Their phone # is (800) 201-4201.

Their website is http://www.canogacamera.com

and so far I've come up aces on eBay. In fact, I just purchased a wonderful, barely used 40D on eBay for $925. It even shipped to UT from PR via USPS in less than three days! I think that the possibility of saving $200+ is well worth the gamble, especially with a historically reliable seller. These days there are so many people that buy these cameras simply because they can afford it. Eventually, they figure out they don't need it and then they don't seem to care too much about how much money they lose selling it!

If your new to DSLR cameras, I would consider buying from a local dealer that offer training classes. In Atlanta Showcase provides a training class with a new camera purchase. Having a resource to assist you in getting to know your camera is worth paying a little more. Just my thought.

I like Amazon. They never screwed me over, and they even credited my charge card for $90 because their selling price on the 40D dropped that much within 30 Days of my purchase date (Olga gave me the heads up, and Amazon credited me right away).

They offer some great deals after you build a buy/search track record as well. Last week, I noticed a 'Gold Box' deal on the PIXMA Pro 9500 printer for $680 with no tax, and free standard shipping. That beat the B&H price by $50, and B&H wanted $31 more for UPS ground shipping. That's an $80 savings, and I had the printer in two days. I already use the Pro 9000 printer for my work every day, but wanted the 9500 as well for monochrome and certain types of color printing. I would have held out for several Months if Amazon didn't tease me with that deal.

Amazon is a great place to buy from if you know what you want, and are just looking for a reliabe outlet with good prices, and great shipping deals.

A major reason why I plan to make my photo purchases through B&H is that it's only a block from Penn Station, so I can go there on my way home for work, or take a 25 minute train ride into the city on a Sunday... much better than having to wait for UPS!

Jeremy,

I buy lots of stuff from B&H. I never had problems with them, Adorama, or Beach Camera (Beach is about a mile or two away from me in NJ). All of their pricing is usually spot on, and they ship fast. Many times, I buy from B&H and Adorama through Amazon (they are Amazon partners).

My main reason for trying to buy direct from Amazon when the price is right, is that they offer free shipping, and no NJ sales tax. On a big ticket item, that can add up to a lot of cash.

Otherwise, B&H is great, and I love their catalogs. I tend to drool on them a bit, but they last until the next issue. They are also available in PDF format.

but be sure to make sure you're buying from Amazon.com, other vendors sell thru Amazon but have different price match and return policies...
