I'm being challenged as putting in a photo that isn't in good taste and too provocative. I totally disagree. I think it is a tasteful glamourous photo. Am I wrong. What do you guys think? Please read some of the comments below the photo. Two of them are rather negative. I was really surprised and dismayed by the reaction to this photo. Here's the link:

As the host, I made the rules. In the rules it says "No nudity or indecent glamour photography." I don't consider your pictures to be indecent. I thik that the third one is borderline. I like number two a lot, I think it is very classy looking, and the first one is very dramatic looking. Don't worry about it Arlene, they are technically perfect, and I'm sure the subjects were very pleased with the results, which is really what counts. Portraits are about pleasing the subject as far as I'm concerned.

Arlene:

I'm a bit on the "conservative" (read: a bit prudish) side when it comes to things like this, but I can say for sure that your images are NOT too provacative, nor are they in bad taste.

Sarah's the boss, and she says they're okay. I say they stay.

They all look fine to me. Presonally, I wouldn't class them as indecent.

And by the way, they're excellent shots. I like number 1 the best for its symmetry.

What lighting setup did you use?

Hi Pinback,

Thank you for the comments.

I used a main light - a large softbox, a hair light, a backlight and a fill light (another smaller softbox) under the subject.

I agree, Arlene, these are tasteful. You do a beautiful job with them. I understand the point that it's a "family" site but you are right, a swimsuit shot would (could) be much more provacative than a glamour shot like this.

Each person is right in their own ways. One thing you need to realize and not take it so personally is the reach this site has, hence the differences in opinion and customs.

To give you an example, I myself back in college had a lot of friends, and often I would touch their shoulder or arm during chatting. One time I did this to a Jewish female friend, and I was told later by my male friend not to do that because in their religion it isnt something one should do.

Same would goes for this kind of shots. What we are accustom to may not be acceptable by others from a different background/religion/country.

I myself wont be too concerned about it.

Jimmy, Thanks for your point of view. I was just taken by surprise. But you're right, different cultures, different levels of tolorance. I suppose in the Talaban controled Afganistan, I would have been burned at the stake--Love, Arlene

Arlene, there's certainly nothing indecent about this picture to those of us in the free world. :)

To be truthful, it is more of a glamour photo than a portrait, and as such I feel it bends the rules of the contest just a bit. But as said earlier, if Cindy says yes then great. They are tasteful and well done.

Nice job!

arlene you are not wrong. but on the other hand i would find it hard to say that the authors of those 2 comments are wrong. this is not a black or white issue. but one with 254 shades of grey.

but i will say that i support your right to have them in the challenge if the host has deemed that they fall within the rules if not the spirit of the challenges.

not long ago we had controversy about photos of homeless people in the journalism challenge. some people said those photos didn't belong. that incident led to the affected artists removing their work which was rather unfortunate.

it is also unfortunate that you have become the target this time but please remember that these attacks are not personal and are solely based on peoples opinions and preferences.

simply choose to agree to disagree (probably easier said than done). and don't let this affect your future choices of submitted photos in any way.

not saying that you are even considering it but i would be saddened to see another member up and leave because of someone else's comments.

hang in there arlene. i imagine it's an unpleasant experience now but soon it will be but a distant memory.
