D300 focus speed

nice except that on the lens they had on it (a 70-300 f4.5-5.6)
seemed to be very slow at focusing.

Is this a camera issue or just this lens? I turned off vr since the
saleman suggested that would help speed it up (not sure if thats true
or not). Ive heard great things about the focus so am sure its the
lens or user error. I will try another store in a few days to see if
they have the 70-200 2.8 which is the lens id get ).
