The negativism surrounding the announcement of this camera is both surprising and inappropriate, IMO. Is it always like this in Pentax World?

Here's a prediction: When the K20D is finally released, and ordinary users get to try it in the real world, we will begin to hear gushing praise for its IQ, ergonomics, build quality, etc, just as it was for the K10D. We may even hear talk of how the autofocus works pretty darn well, and that overall, the K20D is a good alternative to the D300, and that in some ways, it's better. Right about then, many of those who were trashing the camera before it was even delivered will begin to have second thoughts about switching brands or not upgrading.

Here's another prediction: Many users of other brands, including the big two, will be astonished by the IQ of the K20D, although few of them will acknowledge this publicly. Rather, they will join together in the usual chant about AF, fps, flashes, etc, all of which may be true but irrelevant to those who merely want a camera that can take stunning photographs.

If I'm wrong, sue me ;> )

For me is about balance...many expected a more balanced general purpose cam as follow up of the K10D. Off course with good IQ but other aspects of a DSLR competitive with competition. It's hard to swallow that a Canon 40D which cost less has greater specs ...on partial important items.. than the K20D.

Even many expected it would be truly competitive with d300...but reality is now here and my guess is that Pentax K20D could be a pretty good DSLR in it's own terms.

If Pentax can pull off the promised high IQ up to ISO 3200 with 14+ Mp, than there is no doubt that the cam will sell big time. But if IQ is only equal to the competition than ....hmmmm it will be a hard sell with these higher prices.

The future holds the truth so i can wait for it.

I have the deepest respect for all those people who like me.

A lot of pentaxians want a DSLR that returns some features Pentax Z-1p had 15 years ago: 4fps, 1/8000 high speed shutter, flash sync 1/250...

They will probably have to wait for K1D - K20D is and updated K10D, a great camera, but not placed above its predecessor.

I suspect a lot of the newcomers are quite unfamiliar with what Pentax offered in the past. Both my MX and LX also had 250 exposure film backs and the LX could reel off 5.5 FPS using the motor (which I had) and it's heading for 30 years old now.

I had the majority of my costly Pentax glass well before Pentax delivered a DSLR and I'm still waiting on a body that I think will deliver the full potential of my glass.

Tired about this negativism about... negativism. :)

I don't have problems hearing negative opinions along positive ones. I'll ultimately make my own opinion. I prefer to get the raw feelings from everyone than someone sorting them for me. And as you seem to have a good crystal ball, not sure what you complain about. Without any negativism you wouldn't be able to say later "I told you so!". :) Geez, relax..:)

"Relax" is what "the sky is falling" folks should do. I'm actually feeling quite serene about what Pentax has accomplished.

Disclaimer: Serenity may vanish if production K20D is bug-ridden and does not work.

Nothing new here, we are like a bunch of Pitt Bulldogs gone rabid over here. We are well known known as the meanest Forum anywhere in cyberspace and even in the real world. If it is known in the real world that you are a member here, you will be denied credit, refused service at most retail sites, and if you are in a bad auto wreck they will rush everyone else to the emergency room but push you over in the ditch and throw dirt on you. Have you ever been here before? Want to fight? If so, I'll call some of the other dogs over and we will give you something you won't forget. LOL

BTW-Most of us were also angry that Pentax did not follow our request and name the new model "K9".

What do we have?

1. It's not the best camera for action sports or frenetic wildlife, but more than adequate

2. It's not the best camera for people who can't or won't focus manually under any circumstances, but more than adequate

3. It apparently delivers excellent photos with stunning detail under all normal and even some abonormal circumstances (isn't that mostly what cameras are for?)

4. It doesn't cost an arm and a leg (isn't that worth something to some people?)

Where's the problem? It doesn't have everything for everyone at a rock-bottom price? What camera does?

I guess for some people it's just still not the camera we've been waiting for and I'm sure a lot of those whining would pay good money for the right camera.

For instance if the Nikon D3 had a K-mount I would not even have to think about making a decision to purchase at the D3's price. It's hard to ***** and moan about a camera like that, pity it just takes Nikon glass.

Just in case Robgo is indeed wrong, perhaps we should contact an attorney now and get our legal case ready... :)

Even if the K20D has solid image IQ, dynamic range and higher ISO performance, if it is still hunting & pecking in low light, what good will they be? The K10D hunted like hell in poor lighting conditions. If the K20D has a similar fall-off in its ability to autofocus in lower light conditions, it may render some of the benefits of better high ISO performance rather meaningless - at least for anything not standing still...

As indicated in a previous post, the better image IQ may keep some of the Pentax Faithful, but don't be surprised if some end up jumping ship since they don't want to spent $300 over the original price of the K10D just to experience the same limitations of the AF system, particularly when the competition is offering improved IQ AND faster AF.

And for what people pay for entire "systems" - a few hundred dollars for the price of the body alone may not ultimately be the deciding factor - at least not for the serious hobbyists that provide reoccurring revenue to the DSLR and lens companies. Educated consumers will consider the full cost of going with one brand or another along with the options that go (or do not go) along with it.

I considered waiting until the K20D was announced, but realized that Pentax was still going to be lagging the competitors in lens and accessory choices as well as AF speed. Where are the low or mid-range priced Pentax lenses with in-lens motors to compete with the Nikon & Canon offerings?

The excuse makers on this forum are already explaining away the lack of AF improvements and claiming the camera will be "Great for landscapes". Does anyone think the new Canons or Nikons won't be capable of stunning landscapes PLUS boast of faster AF and offer more lens choices for consumers?

That is the key question that people will consider when looking at the K20D - what else can they get for their money and what are the benefits of going with each of the brands.

If the K20D had indeed solved the AF issue AND Pentax did something to address its suite of lenses (including offerings to compete with Nikon's & Canon's low-cost, high IQ, high speed focusing lenses), I might agree with you on the K20D causing the others some serious competition.

Thus far, the specs on the K20 don't bear that out. Neither do we see any great increase in the number of lenses from Pentax or third parties, most notably a decent 70-300mm zoom.

I dont have one, but I am... shock horror interested in one.

I for one have to complain..because pentax are appealing to me, they are obviously doing something wrong if other non pentax camera users are taking notice ;-) ;-)

Good points all.

My take. Hoya is a company that has apparently never made a loss. They are obviously trying to milk the consumers into spending... Can be seen in 3 clear ways:

1- The K20D is a camera too early. It would have been great with a nice new powerful autofocus system even if the price was jacked up a couple of 100. Hoya is gonna make some money of this and then realease a K25/K30 with superior AF at a higher cost.

2- The K200D. If there ever was a more redundant camera in the Pentax lineup it was the K100D Super. The K200D comes mighty close. More expensive than a K10D and arguably less features.

3- Ridiculously expensive new lenses with limited use. Whats the point of a 300mm f4, 200mm f2.8 when the camera can't track?

I'm still hoping that the new AF algorithms improve AF and I'm proven wrong on 1&3. If not then the IQ had better be STUNNING.

You are quite right, of course. If Pentax offered both the K20 and a D3-equivalent I would probably buy the D3-equivalent even at considerable extra cost. Obviously, I am as eager as anyone for Pentax to produce a higher-end camera, whether I decide to buy one or not.

My complaint is that people are aggravated that the K20 is not the camera they are waiting for, even though it does meet the needs of most people and is to all appearances a highly competitive camera for the price although it will not fit everyone's needs.

I sincerely hope, for purely selfish reasons, that Pentax will next come out with the camera that you covet. I will probably buy it and be thankful to you and others for demanding it.

In the meantime, let's be reasonable about the demands we can make of a camera at the K20's price.
