For anyone who missed out on the last time, the L1 price is $799.94 on Amazon right now. Get it while you can! ;-)

For anyone with an L10 (or any 4/3 camera), it's worth it for the lens alone (and the body is actually quite nice to use).

An amazing deal.

I was out shooting with the L1 fitted with a Nikkor 20mm f/3.5 lens again this morning. I can't tell you how much I enjoy using this setup. It's compact, fits nicely into a small bag or into my F803 camera satchel with all my other junk, and works a treat. I focus mostly by scale and ride the DoF. The results are just delightful.

The Leica 14-50/2.8-3.5 is a terrific lens too. Currenly I'm using it on the Olympus E-1 a lot ... it fits that body very nicely (as well as the L1) and the OIS lends a bit more range to what I can do with the E-1 hand-held.

$800 ... I'm tempted to buy a third L1 kit at that price.. ! =8^O

Have you used the 14-50 on the E330 by any chance? I'm thinking the Live view A and the tilt screen would be great and the body is dirt cheap right now. I think $299 is the lowest I found yesterday.

I haven't. I've considered the E-330 a couple of times, but the L1 does what I want so well I can't justify spending money for the E-330 body. Live View A mode doesn't interest me much.

Godfrey,

Just curious, when you're going out to shoot pics, what is it about the L1 that makes you pick it up instead of your Pentax gear?

Several things come into the decision process when I'm going out to make photos. In no particular order:
  • what lens(es) I want/need to use
  • what subject matter I'm after
  • whether I'll be working hand-held or on a tripod
  • whether the light is bright or dim
  • whether I want 2:3 format or 3:4 format
etc etc.

The Pentax K10D is a faster operating camera and better at sequences. It also has about a stop more sensitivity and in-body IS making it a good choice for when the light is poor. The L1 is a little easier to keep unobtrusive due to its simple, blocky shape, fits in a smaller bag easily, and I like using the Live View feature when I'm working on a tripod. I like using older adapted lenses on the L1 too ... it works very well with a couple of older Pentax and Nikkor lenses which rendering qualities I like.

All that put together, it's often whimsy that makes the decision. ;-)

Godfrey

Godfrey...may I ask what lens mount adapters do you use to be able to use these lenses? Thanks. CB

I've bought Nikon and Pentax K adapters from fotodiox.com via Ebay. About $30 apiece. They are nicely made and work well.

Thanks, Godfrey. Although I certainly don't need one, the retro looks/features of the L1 combined with the discounted price make it tempting.

Thank you much for letting me know! I will look into this option. Have a great weekend. CB

They don't ship to the Netherlands! Pitty!

I think I'll cool off on the E330 idea and just continue saving for the Leica 25mm. I really 'NEED' that lens. :-)

My first attempt at shooting with a manual lens is the OM 50mm f1.8. I feared I'd have trouble with the small viewfinder, but happily that's not the case. Easy as pie! So, may try to find some other old lens bargains. I'll look for the Nikkor 20mm, thanks for the tip.

May I have a little input? I am wrestling with purchasing a new digital. With the Amazon deal on the L1 it makes that camera very attractive. Any comments with regard to IQ between it (the 4/3 system cameras in general) and the Fuji s5 or Nikon D300?

Pastor Chuck

On the last few... get the camera... you wont regret it
And the 25mm is just a delight

The camera gets a lot of comments.. most think it is a real high end camera.. and they are right.:)

Oh I would get the new Nikon if this was not filling every need I have so far...

I just like the whole set up as it works just about as good as anything I could have bought

Thanks for the comments Tom. I appreciate them. I'm heading for Orlando on Monday at 6:00 am to see a new granddaughter. I may try to see if Amazon can send the camera to my daughter and son-in-law's home overnight ... if I don't just purchase the Nikon ... or the Fuji ... the problem with choices like these is once you've made them they are done and you have to live with them. But it sounds like you are very pleased.

Thanks again.

Chuck

Chuck,

You might check to see what the cost of extra lenses are in comparison to others like the Nikon, S5 etc. It's hard to tell which lenses work with the L1, and what their costs are. I'm sure some others can offer some input on this.

Good shooting,
Otto...

I'm not sure what you mean, Otto. All 4/3 System lenses from Panasonic/Leica and Olympus (and Sigma, but I don't buy Sigma lenses) work perfectly with the L1. What's difficult about that?

Panasonic/Leica offers four lenses at present ... the L1 standard lens is the Vario-Elmarit-D 14-50/2.8-3.5 ASPH OIS, which covers a huge amount of what you need. There's a less expensive, slower version of that lens which is included with the L10 model. Then they offer the Summilux-D 25mm f/1.4 ASPH, a very expensive but superb performer. And the Vario-Elmarit 14-150/3.5-6.3 (?) ASPH OIS, another high-end offering that started shipping recently.

Olympus offers seven lenses in the standard line and ten lenses in the high grade and super high grade line. These cover the gamut and all of them are good, where the high grade and super high grade are amongst the best offerings on the market.

Sigma offers about six lenses, I think. I've heard good things about a couple of them, but I don't trust Sigma QC.

The Fuji S5 and Nikon D300 are in a different class of camera from the L1. They are the entry level pro-class bodies where the L1 is an advanced amateur body. Regards image quality, well, that depends a lot more on you and what you do with these cameras than on the cameras themselves. Whether you capture in JPEG or RAW, how you process the images, etc etc, all make a difference.

They're all good performers. The lens on the L1 is terrific, which means that it will out-perform either of the other two if you don't put a lens of equal quality on them (which will cost far more than the current $800 price on the L1 body with lens...!).

I've shown and sold work made with the L1 alongside other work made with the highest end cameras. It holds its own.
