with the 800 now announced, who's going to make the jump?

I was a 600 user (with my Mrs using a 400/2.8) and we migrated to a 500/4 each. I am thinking of adding the 800/5.6 to the armoury.

Any thoughts???

Plus it is lighter than the 600..... bonus!!

I thought it a pointless lens, even with improved IS - you already have 800mm at f/5.6 on a 600mm, why would you give up f/4.0?

And today, i read it will introduce at an absurd $12,000!

Then I read that it will be 2 pounds/1 kilo lighter......

Hmmmm.

You don't think they really will be asking a full $12K, will they?

I would switch in a heartbeat if I had the funds. I am spending this years camera money on the 1DS-mk3. I should have gotten the 600 the first time around. but the 800 is even better.

What good is f4? I never have any subects that are thin enough to remain inside the DOF at f4. I usuallu shot my 500+1.4X at f8 or more just for DOF, but also to make up for the AF error built into every Canon product.

For example, an eagle I did this year with the 700 at f8 on a 5D, was just in the DOF limits, this was perched at a distance or around 40 feet or so. But even flier further out need more because of wingspan.

Maybe with really accurate AF, a small bird would be ok at f4.

I'm one of those folks that attaches a 1.4x about 95% of the time I use my 500. If money were no object I would swap my 500 for an 800 for birding and get a 300/2.8 for a carry around wildlife lens.

In the real world though, the 500 stays.

The Canon 800/5.6 will be my next new supertele lens because:
  • I use too many times the 500/4+1.4x
  • The 800 is (possibly) the best supertele ever made
  • I have the funds to buy it

The 800mm Lens only weighs 10 pound!!!

My World History book weighs 7lbs and I have to carry that around 6 hours a day.

10lb is the lightest weights we have in weight training class. LOL

But I understand not everyone here is in weight training.

Lenses I'm waiting for:
AF-S 80-400mm f/4-5.6G VRII
AF-S 27-300mm f/3.5-5.6G VRII
AF-S 16-135mm f/3.5-4.5G VRII
AF-S 12-36mm f/4G

We Can All Wish Can't We?

Edge of the 800 L IS over the Sigmonster - 3 lbs lighter, sharper wide open (from the MTF), faster AF (USM + focus limiter) and 4 stops IS. The Sigmonster edges it out only in framing flexibility.

If money is no object, I think the best birding combo in the planet now is a 1Ds3 (same pixel density as 20D) + 800 IS + optional 1.4x TC. The crop-ability of the 1Ds3's 21 MP somehow makes up for the 800 prime's single focal length as far as framing flexibility is concerned. Plus the bonus of pro-AF.

PHILIPPINE WILD BIRDS

(Over 240 species captured in habitat, and counting.)

It would make a nice combo with my 500 f/4L IS. I could put the 800 on a tripod and use the 500 HH.

I have owned and used the 600 f/4L IS extensively so the 800 will be nice at a lighter weight. I can stick my MKIII on the 500 for BIF and my 1DsMKIII on the 800 for tripod shots.

Just tell me where I can buy it.

Hi Ben

In general I agree with you, but shallow DOF works many times.
It is doable
It is doable if you have accurate AF. I need to calculate the DOF, then double it to accomodate the front focus error. You spent a lot of time getting your lens fixed, I plan to fix mine with mocro adjust. Then maybe I will be able to use shallow DOF. But first I just need to be able to get some of the bird in focus before I can get selective.
cheers

With you on that Fred, 300mm f/2.8 plus 800mm would be a nice set-up. Even nicer would be a Canon version of the Nikon 200-400mm for general wildlife and then the 800mm monster for the special stuff.

Can only dream!!!

Yes I do, all new canon lens are increasing in price. You can get the EF 600 for $7200, thats a whole lot less than $12,000 for the EF 800.

And STILL not on the shelves.

I called a few top tier vendors last week, they said no show so far....and, they have very few orders for this lens, I am being told. Good!

I've owned two 600 f/4.0 IS lens, just traded the second last month for a BNIB 1Ds3...oh, and a bit of cash went with the lens. But I was lucky to find someone who was willing to trade. Gotta keep telling myself that when I miss the lens too much.!

NOW....my LensTrekker 600 sits empty and waiting! Come on, Canon!

Hi Gene,

Just curious, with all due respect, did you pay this bird in your 1st photo to pose for you in your studio? It looks so unreal, although it's a wonderful photo, just like the rest of them.

I always admire your excellent work, thanks for sharing.

cheerz.

I was going to say "Wow! Who is the new talent posting here? This photographer is good!

Then I saw who it was. :) Beautiful work, Hawkman.

Am I going 800/5.6? Yes, I think so. But I'm not going to be one of the early adopters. I plan to wait for a while, first to see what results others get with it, second to let the price drop a bit - it's way too dear at present - third to let Canon get into stride with the manufacturing process and take care of any minor issues that crop up, and finally because I have my eye on either a 300/2.8 or 400/2.8 first. Possibly also a 1Ds III, but I'd prefer to wait a little longer and look at the 1Ds IV.

Meanwhile, I'll carry on with the 1D III and the 500/4.

I dont think i would replace my 600 with an 800. I could see adding one for specific times but a 600 is a pretty nice focal length

I generally go out with a 600 and a 300 2.8. sold my 500 after getting the 600.

if possible i try to get within reach of the shorter lenses as the image quality is higher the closer you are.
