Take your time and get used to the camera with your prime.

Wasn't sure if you are aware of this being a new member, but you should look into the Canon SLR Lens Talk forum for more discussion and great suggestions while you consider your options.

I think you know this already - but this lens is pretty good - it has probably 2 shortcomings ....
  • not very sharp wide open -- from about 2.8 or so, it becomes much better
  • the focus mechanism is not very accurate (not in the Rebel series, at least) - so it kinda "jumps" over the focus rather than smoothly move across -- this tends to get exaggerated when using it with wide apertures giving you soft looking images.
If you watch out for these 2 gotchas, its a terrific little lens.

What about this tamron 28-75 2.8?
I have the 28-75 f/2.8..... I payed $345.00 at Digbuy.com..or somethung like that.

It is a great lens...It is my normal lens. Because I do more portrait type photo's and indoor photos of my son...I chose the 28-75 over the 17-50

I use it in the studio too -- having a constant f/stop with a zoom is very important so you don't have recalculate the f/stop for proper exposure at the longer focal lengths.

It is a very sharp, even at f/2.8..(I did send to Tamron to make sure it was properly culminated to be sharp at all FLs...)
