FL-50 and 50-200 for sports

My FL-50 arrives today so I will be using this combo on my E-500 in the spring for my 3 yr old.
For now it will be for his skating lessons indoors.

I have used that combination for the past three years doing high school football. The long lens for obvious reasons. The flash is required because HS football stadiums are notoriously poorly lighted. Even at ISO 3200 at f4.0 you still cannot shutter speeds above 1/80. Especially in the end zones.

The combination works for what I need.

I don't even own a flash, and don't need it for outdoor sports. But the 50-200 is perfect, se my beach volleyball images in my link. (Taken with E-510, have now got the E-3 and will get the new 50200).

I used a flash (FL36) outdoors in a sporting situation recently.
A rather gloomy day with a cyclocross event.

Not that hard to capture, because you can stand next to the track they ride their bikes on, see them coming and choose your moment. The slowish charge time of the FL36 is less of a problem there, than in sports that are all about reflexes.

In general (exceptions notwithstanding) the results with a little flash were better, not only because they were better lit, but also and mainly because of the faster shutter speed it allowed, so less (if any) subject motion blur.

Just looked at the volleyball.
Very nice work.
I really like my 50-200 (old) e-510.

I'm looking forward to hearing your impressions of the new SWD version with your E-3

Thanks for the feedback. What do you do about noise at ISO 3200?

I read your response and am curious as to why you cannot shoot faster than 1/80 Sec.? The E-1's will synch at 1/160 Sec and the E-3 at 1/250 Sec. Also, what does the endzone have to do with shutter speeds? Maybe I misunderstood your comment.

God Bless,
Greg

I read Ray as saying he couldn't get above that even at f4 and max iso - therefore he used the fl50 (instead of working without).
