and the a700 seems to have done fine.

I'm trying to find reasons why I might like to move from my R1 to the a700. I find that it's hard when I have a series of shots to keep the white balance similar among them all. Perhaps working in RAW with output from the a700 might help me to do that.

I like your shots. The beauty is in capturing the settings of the scene.
Yours are crisp, clean, and I can feel being part of their surroundings.

I too have the same 17-250 lens and look forward to getting out and doing some outdoor shots.

God bless and keep shooting.

Number four is really nice. I don't think I ever took a picture with the 350 that had such subtle detail in a solid layer of clouds like that.

Nice shots.

I am interested in the a700, so your samples were most welcome.

Personally, I prefer much tighter framing. For example, you could have moved in much closer to the rusty old car (so that it more than fills the frame) and -separately- taken some close-up shots of the large pieces of cut wood, showing some texture; e.g. growth rings (or whatever). Some could have been "against the light" or with strong "side-lighting". A shot taken in such a way that the scene is "framed" by the old car's window, or close-ups of some streaks of rust juxtaposed with remnants of original duco, a reflection of the scene in the car's windshield (e.g., sky with clouds, or you yourself?) -asuming there is still some glass in it- may have been "interesting".

Those are nice. Sorta reminds me of the area around where my grandma used to live - rural Oklahoma. Lots of old rusty cars and weathered wood.

Thanks.

Thank You for your comments and suggestions. Aside from the miserable weather here in the northeast, these were taken from the side of the road shooting out the passenger window while driving around the back roads. Did not want to press my luck "trespassing" on someone's property to get closer. Believe it or not, someone actually lived in a house (out of frame) in the shot with the old rusty car.

John,

After the firmware upgrades, I have gone back to shooting a lot of xfine jpg and they are more than acceptable with minor pp adjustments. I have never owned an R1 so I cannot comment on it's performance, but the A700 is a pleasure to work with.

Thank You. I bought my A700 in October just before the cooler and now downright colder weather set in, so I too am longing for a nice spring day to get out and really put it to some good use.

Janet,

Thank You. Only the 2nd outing with this lens, but it continues to impress.

Hi, Bart - when I saw the first picture, my mind said, "New Jersey" ... I live in South Brunswick. Nice shots. I've got the same model lens, and am wondering if you've profiled the distortion corrections for the wide end (your pics don't have EXIF data, so I can't tell if you've used Photoshop). In thinking about that subject, it would be nice to have a thread that gets updated, by lens model, with correction values people have determined for different focal lengths of all lenses - it sounds like something that might live well over at Dyxum.

Anyway, sorry for the digression! If you're anywhere within reach of South Brunswick and there's any interest, maybe we could eventually gather NJ shooters (of any camera brand) who'd like to contribute places of interest and get together for shoots. And thanks for posting these.

John,

I still have my R1 and I still use it... but when I need better low light focusing, faster AF, burst to 5, longer lens, I use the A700. To get a lens equivalent to the Zeiss on my R1 it cost me $1,399USD body + $599 Zeiss 16-80 lens, so it's not a cheap propostion. I will tell you have never regretted the purchase.

Hey Rich,

Thanks for the comments. You were right - These were all shot around the Flemington area. There is only minimal processing done to these. They were all shot with Auto WB and Auto ISO with DRO + Most are cropped somewhat and I boosted the contrast and saturation on a few. I'm not sure why the exif info does not carry over, but most of it can be seen on my Smug Mug page.

I live near Bridgewater, and work down in Cranbury, so I pass through South Brunswick everyday. Perhaps when this lovely weather we have been having breaks, we can put something together.
