does anyone know why when I take pictures in the dark situations they happen to be better with no flash than with it. They just seem to be lighter. In contrast, with flash they are too dark. (I take pictures outside)
I use C-3020Z

How far away from your subject are you? The flash on these digital camera is generally only good for 6 to 10 feet. If you are outdoors, with no reflections from walls, you might not even get that much. You can generally make adjustments to compensate for dark photos, but I am not familiar with the 3020, so cannot give specific instructions.

ok, for example I'm on the top of Empire State Building and I want to take a picture of my girl, but I also want whole the scene behind her shoulders(you know, buildings and stuff). So I need flash, right ? but with flash the pictures are too dark. that's what i meant.
I apreciate any help
also, what shutter speed, aperture, and ISO should I use in these situations ?

Forget the flash as it will do nothing for you in that scenario. As I said before the flash may light 6 - 10 feet indoors. There is absolutely no effect outdoors beyond that 6 - 10 feet. You are shooting with available light only. Do it in the daylight or use a tripod for time exposure shots.

alright, I got it
however another questions comes out:

what if this person 6-10 feet from me ? the flash is necessary in this situation... and how do I do the time exposure shots ?
thanks
