Is the software for GRD/GRDII Mac friendly? Are there good alternatives/third-party apps? I am wondering about Raw conversion, GRD movie format, and post processing.

Are there Mac + GRD owners out there who can comment?

Thanks.

If you mean the updating of the incamera software it is all fine ( I do all this with a GRD not a GRDII). You can plug the camera in and update or put it on an SD card and load from there. I do all my work photowork out of camera. Get a card reader then read from there, iPhoto or photoshop etc. Never tried the CDs that come with the camera as I have all I need in the Mac already.

I have Photoshop Cs and all is OK. I just drag the files off the card onto a hard disc then open these and play with them in Photoshop. Older versions may need an update or plug in but all is OK with CS.There are some free RAW converters I believe; perhaps take a look at http://www.versiontracker.com

I also work with a Mac with Leopard + Lightroom and Photoshop. I hadn't thought about this, but does Camera RAW support GRDII files?

I can post this as a separate thread too once the system is fully operative.

Try Silkypix for a RAW converter. For Mac and PC.

There's a free version with limited controls and the real version at US$149 found from...
http://www.isl.co.jp/SILKYPIX/english/

There used to be a 30 day full version trial available, not sure if that's still there, but the simple free version works for me in the PC world if the RAW file is not too difficult.

The list of cameras handled includes GR Digital and GX100 and also of course it handles all DNG files.

I've always found Silkypix gives the nicest results more easily than the others out there.

To answer your questions, no the bundled Ricoh software does not work on a MAC (PC only). If you have iLife 8, iPhoto will convert and handle RAW files from the Ricoh previous versions had problems with RAW, also I believe Preview in Leopard will also allow you view and convert RAW files. Neither application is great at RAW processing so perhaps try to find another. I use Lightroom with my GRD2 on Mac and find it very good - but it's not cheap. Alternatively you could try another app as suggested.

iPhoto, Aperture and for that matter HoudahGeo support many RAW formats through libraries built into the system.

For these libraries to recognize the Ricoh RAW format, they need to be aware of a couple settings. Luckily those settings are the same as for an existing Panasonic camera.

Thus it all boils down to adding the following lines

RICOH GR DIGITAL Panasonic DMC-LX2
RICOH GR DIGITAL 2 Panasonic DMC-LX2
RICOH Caplio GX100 Panasonic DMC-LX2
Leica D-LUX 3 Panasonic DMC-LX2

to System/Library/CoreServices/RawCamera.bundle/Contents/Resources/Raw.plist

This should read something like:

<key>RICOH GR DIGITAL 2< key> <string>Panasonic DMC-LX2< string>
