So who CAN I trust to buy from online?

another example: sometimes the item you are looking for is offered by
a very sleazy seller. I have been 'pinging' the amazon site to
closely watch the e510 price (for example). sometimes its on sale
for $495 body only. refresh your browser and it comes up $495 for
body+lens! refresh again and its $700 for body+lens. its crazy!
depends on how the database 'likes' you it seems ;)
It's called dynamic pricing and Amazon does it too with the stuff that they sell. Their computers constantly check out the competition and other factors and reprice items.

is it even more than that, I wonder?

I see vendors come and go. maybe the vendors 'bid' to offer X units at Y price and so those go into the 'pool' until they're exhausted?

it really surprised me the variance. again, $500 for a body+lens then $500 for the body then even $600 for the body. that's a LOT of jump!

when I got my $495 price from an amazon 'partner' for the body+lens, I went to their direct website and their price was $585 or $590 for the thing I got FROM THEM just 5 minutes ago for $495.

its just darned odd, is all.

The best reasonably reliable seller is Amazon. I have never had problems in a lot of orders, but some people don't like them.

$399.94, qualifies for free shipping, ships from and sold by Amazon, so you aren't dealing with 3rd parties.

The best price from a rock solid, always reliable seller is newegg, $439.99, also qualifies for free shipping.

use buy.com and takeyourchances.com is what will happen to you..

;)
Excuse me, but I've used buy.com and I've never had any problems.
buy.com is an india based middleman with no stock of their own. it takes a full day to get any reply back from them.

they are not scammers, but do NOT expect real customer service from them. its just not there.

Have bought for a number of years at B & H with good service and without problems but haven't since receiving a poorly packed NIkon zoom. Others were having similar issues at the time (search old threads here) -if they have resolved this they are quite good and can't be beat for selection.

Previously bought in store at Norman Camera (around 10k total purchases) with good service. Had a phone order for a Nikon 200-400 zoom. However, they sold the lens that they "held" for me after having 3 phone calls to Pat Norman not returned regarding some additional equipment and pricing. After waiting months for this lens to be available they said someone came in the store and needed it "today". I guess it was o.k. for me to cancel the excursion I had planned and paid for.

Purchased the lens and other equipment I needed from Cord Camera. First purchase with them. Large chain based in Ohio with multiple stores in midwest. All staff was pleasant and courteous on the phone and in general very helpful. There was a small order snafu but after a follow-up call I had the order delivered in 24 hours. They have an online store and prices for most equipment same or very close to B & H.

Since buy.com is on your list (1.89 out of 10 rating), I'm not sure how much stock I'll put in your list. I only buy @ B&H or local (local is my first choice). I don't mind paying a little more if that means the shop will still be there when I need them.

I can only tell you I've had good experience at buy.com. My first choice is B&H, then Adorama. I don't have any local shops that have the selection or price to compete. Can't buy local if they don't have what I want.

Thats news to me about being a discount dealer. They also charge 6%
tax for on-line Mich, residents.
Well of course...so will any other online retailer that has a physical presence in the state you're ordering from.
