I found an advert in a local classified paper here in London today offering the following for £350 ($690 USD, 469 Euros):
Nikkor 20mm 2.8 (£100)
Nikkor 80-200mm 2.8 (£150)
Nikkor 35-70mm 2.8 (£100)
It sounded like the deal of the century. It was a professional photographer having a bit of a clear out of stuff that he hadn't been using for a couple of years. I went down to his studio to pick them up this morning. All I did was give them a very quick test because I was in a rush - they seemed fine, I handed over the cash and took them home.
I got back tonight and had a look and discovered that the 35-70 is actually a 20-35. That's fine, but it sort of means that there's no point in having the 20mm prime now, doesn't it? I phoned the guy and he was surprised and said it had been an honest mistake. I asked him if he'd take the 20mm back and refund the £100 for that, but he said no - that he'd sold them "as seen".....
I've also noticed that the 20mm front element is sort of "scratched". Well, not exactly scratched, more "worn". There's a circle near the centre of the lens of slightly "rougher" looking glass. It looks like he didn't put a filter on the lens, and where the glass protrudes slightly from the casing it's obviously touched things and become slightly worn over time. Is this something to worry about? Is it likely to affect performance?
Anyway, apart from that, the lenses seem OK. They're all obviously "well used" - none of them could be described as anywhere near mint - quite a bit of chipped/worn paint, but no dents or dings anywhere. They seem to work OK, although the autofocus on the 20mm and the 80-200mm is very noisy (I assume this is normal).....
So, have I been ripped off or not?!
