C-700UZ versus Minolta S404

The image stabilization makes a difference in ALL shooting except
if the camera is on a tripod. The 2100 also comes with a remote
control that comes in very handy, the 700 does not and cannot use a
remote. The 2100 comes with batteries and a charger as well, the
700 doesn't. IMO the 2100 is the better camera.
One other item that wasn't mentioned was the 2100's focus assist lamp which aids the autofocus in low light situations.

hi Peter,

tried to follow ur link and ended up in a private site with freeware things, mostly unix/nt drivers.
what's wrong?
Well, the image stabilization is in effect (from what I am told)
through the entire range.

I am not an expert on the camera, but if you go to Olympus' website
you can compare the features, side by side, of the two cameras.

I am ordering my 2100 from CompUSA tomorrow.

Another thing is to look at the ratings at http://www.megapixel.com . They
are very easy to navigate. The 2100 is the highest rated 2mp
camera.

Good luck.

After reading all your advice, I was ready to get the C-2100. I went to CompUsa tonight to look. Although I really like the additional features of the C-2100, I just don't think I will regularly use a camera of that size. I need one all-purpose camera. So, I think I'll go with the C-700 at Sears (matching internet price) for $384.

Any last thoughts before I take the plunge?

Sounds like a good plan to me. I wish my C2100UZ was smaller also.

I carry a very small Fuji MX1700Z everywhere I go, and my wife just got the really tiny Minolta Dimage X as her carry everywhere camera.

Doesn't matter how good the camera is, if you don't have it with you, you won't get the shot. If the UZI is too big, I think the C700 is a good choice.

The 499$ price for the c700 is to high. You can find it for much less than that at buydig.com, brand new USA model with full USA one year warranty for about 375$.

Its great to have that much zoom power. I don,t know much about the other camera but i love my c700. Its a small, rugged and sturdy little camera, with a powerfull zoom.

I am looking for a mid-level camera--it will be the best I have,
but I am not a photography enthusiast. I will use the camera
mostly for digital use (e-mail, web pages, etc.), but I will print
out 4x6's from time to time.

I was settled on a 700UZ for $499. The 2 megapixel size seemed
adequate, and the 10x optical zoom seemed ideal for folks that
would rather not have to zoom and crop photos on a regular basis.

However, I just spotted the review for the Minolta S404, and it
seems to be rated on this site as significantly better than the
C700UZ at the same price.

Any thoughts or guidance would be much appreciated.

No need for the image stabilizer on the c700, its well balanced and easy to handheld at full zoom, up to quite slow shutter speed.

I can do it up to 1/30 without any problem. even more if i be carefull.

Image stabilizer might be a necessity on the more bulky c2100 but not on the c700.

Also if you get a c2100 you really need to get an extended warranty as they are subject to get SDS. the c700 seams to be free of this problem so far.
I'm getting in too deep. As I understand it the biggest knock on
the 700UZ is lack of image stabilization--the 2100UZ has it. The
2100 UZ is available for $450. Bad idea?

Charles,

I noticed on the Sears website, that Beach Camera is not listed as one of their "accepted" On-line retailers used for pricing. Obviously they accepted Beach camera since you bought it, but I was wondering if they gave you a problem when you did the transaction. How smoothly did it go with Sears?
