I've bought a D40 today as a holiday camera as my D200 is a bit bulky to fit in a rucksack/hand-luggage.

It looks a great little camera at a sensible price but I'm surprised that the kit doesn't include a protecting cover for the LCD.

I'd like a genuine Nikon one but I've not tracked a supplier yet. Can anyone point me in the right direction or pusuade me to try a spurious make instead.

You could have spent a little more money and got the D80 which has a screen protector
They really should have put a screen protector on the D40/ D40x camera

Canon does not have screen protectors on any of there cameras including the high end ones

For my D50, I purchased a "clear skin overlay" that was designed for a 1st gen iPod Nano, and cut it to size. The D40 with its larger screen may need something a bit larger, but the iPod Nanos are larger now as well...

Works great, is cheap, and doesn't seem to reduce clarity (just make sure the screen is perfectly clean before putting it on). Also less bulky than a Nikon style plastic cover.

Cheers,

I did something similar. I used the same clear overlay I put on my PDA screen. Is very cost effective and works. Sometimes the simplest solutions work best.

I got a specially designed HARD plastic cover from ebay that someone else off here recommended. It's excellent.

He could have spent $300 extra to get a camera he didn't want because it had a LCD protector...nice.

Why do you need one? I have been using nikon dslr cameras for 4+ years and have never used one. What am I missing - besides the extra bulk and something that makes it harder to see my screen.

I bought the Giottos screen protector for my D80 as I disliked the ugly plastic one Nikon provides. A little more expensive than some but I'm happy with it. Here's the D40 version

If you don't have any scratches on your screen, then you apparently don't need one. I wear my camera around my neck all the time, and the buttons on my shirts really do a job on the protectors. The screen itself is much harder to scratch than the protector, but it CAN be scratched--and practically speaking, it isn't repairable. So I wear out the $9.95 protectors instead. (The Nikon ones are easy to pop on and off if you really need a closer look at the screen--but the only time I actually take mine off is when it gets fogged up.)

Not only is the D80 twice the price of the D40 but it wasn't the camera I wanted. As I said, I wanted a smaller camera to suppliment my D200. I got rid of my old D70 a few months back and decided on the 40 rather than a point & shoot option.

I tend to use my cameras for 6-8 hours at a time and, having had a screen protector as standard with my current D200 as well as my old D70, I feel happier in the knowledge that I can replace a scratched cover than having to live with a damaged LCD.

Thanks for this and thanks for everyone else who replied on this subject. I saw the Giotto ones at a recent Nikon Solutions show and thought they looked pretty good. I like the fact that you can remove the cover if it's ever damaged by gently warming with a hairdryer.
