Here are a few Winterscapes shot the the D300 + 18-200.
It's not a bad walk-a-round combination.
I like the detail I can pull out of the highlights with the 14bit data.

The gradations, I'm finding, are able to take quite a rigorous post-process scrubbing.

After shooting a year with a Canon 5D, (D200 prior to that), it's taking a month to naturally put my fingers in the correct position. My New Years Wish is for Nikon to update the 50/1.4 with AFS, introduce a 85/1.2 (Canon's version is amazing), and an updated 35/1.4 AFS. Oh sure, I have other requests, but lets start simple, :0)

and finally, my winter fun-time indoor sports entertainment director ... nudge nudge

Thanks for posting the beautiful shots! The 18-200 VR has a whole new life with the D300. Here is a recent D300 18-200 VR sampling in the first four at this search result at my blog, along with some from the past.

More winter photos are to be found at the main blog url. I try to do more close-up work now as well to isolate the color in the often ubiquitous monochromatic snowy scenes.

EDIT: Sorry Eric...wasnt responding to your post...I did my own pet peeve....and responded to the OP in somon elses post....damn me!!!

Was driving past Mount Hood and had to stop for a second.....couldnt go back far as we had no snow shoes...but I wanted to see how the camera does in the snow.

So forgive that I had limited subjects to shoot...but I think it handled the subtil gradients of the snow well...while keeping colors. We just picked up a pair of snowshoes, and I think next weekend will be a hike back to trillium lake (only 2 miles or so)

I try to take scenic shots but my dogs keep getting in the way... ;-)

FYI... The Grey Ghost is a six year old Weimaraner. The Black Devil is a six MONTH old Curly Coated Retriever.

The camera is a D200. The lens is 17-55. I needed to have my big flash in order to get the black eyes of the black pup to have some highlights.

Still figurin' things out... no end in sight!

Here are a few of my samples (all D200 shots):

Frozen pond at sunset (D200 at ISO400 & 28mm F2.8 AIS + Polariser):

Railway line looking bleak after a fresh snowfall (D200 at ISO250 & 28mm F2.8 AIS + Polariser):

A late Winter afternoon sunset sky (D200 at ISO200 & 300mm F4 AFS + tripod):

Further limited exif data embedded in all shots.

I had to travel around seven steps from my front door in order to arrive at this magnificient location. I'm glad I had my imagination with me, otherwise it would've been a boring trip.

And here's another of equally huge scale...

The sparkles are probably the result of my 35mm f/1.4 being very, very "experienced". The rear element has a bit of shine to it, so I guess the coating has all but vanished. Later on I swiped it with pure water and much of the shine dissappeared, so I was left baffled, yet happy. But in this photo, I really think it didn't matter much. They almost look like christmas lights. :)

Matt, I must say that the first one is bordering on being one of my favourite winter pics this season!

It's all very well for you lucky people to post pictures of snow galore, but do spare a thought for us poor snappers stuck where there isn't any :'( This has to be discrimination! Anyone care to start a muddy-gray-leafless-novemberish-depression thread?

:-)

And yes, I know it's just what you make of a scene...

All are beautiful shots from everybody. Dogs can go on leashes & thus be kept out of shots. ;-)

The only thing I could post is a beige & wet "something" - - only way I could make it look "wintery" is by converting it to a B&W & since we know I suck at landscapes I'll spare us all the experience.

Matt - - I had no idea you bought a D300..... That explains why you suddenly showed up in this forum. Good, some of the great guys from the old forum are joining us who felt most left out for a while....

We only had "winter" for a couple of days but the subzero temperatures combined with a lot of humidity in the air transformed the scene into a fantasy landscape covered with ice-crystals. I just had to get out two mornings in a row to soak up the magic;-)

The contrast between the two days couldn't be any bigger, the first day was full of color and warm light and the second was all misty and with cold (if any) light.

D200, Tokina 12-24 and ofcourse tripod mounted:
