This is just rediculous.

What stops a flash from firing when something is close to it?

using 5D plus 580ex2

the thing works fine as long as there is nothing within one meter of the front of the flash, then it will not fire under any circumstance...

Never heard of this.

Do you get no flash at all, or just a preflash?

Is your LED on the flash RED?

Doesnt light up at all. The red light is on, multiple sets of batteries fully charged.

I think it might actually have something to do with the orientation of the camera. when it is pointing downwards it wont fire, when horizontal or upwards its fine. It might have been a coincidence that all circumstances when i thought it wasnt firing because of proximity it might have been orientations.

The 5D works fine with the 580ex 1, and the 580ex 2 works fine on all other cameras. its just the combination of the 5D and 580ex 2.

now that im testing this in pure darkness, i have just noticed that when the flash doesnt fire, the AF Assist lasers also dont emmit from the flash. however the 5D still locks on perfectly fine. I can also get the same result with the lens on manual focus.

you mentioned it being tilted downward and not working... make sure something is not loose allow the connection to be lost when the flash head is tilted downward.... i.e. that will put extra force on the hot shoe...

The hot shoe is a bit wobbly. but why would the 580ex1 work fine with it but not the mark2?

Just tried my 5d since the 580EXII was on it.. 85L.. at min focus distance for AF to lock I could point it in any direction and flash fired..AF assist as well even when I was not able to AF (below min distance)

this has happened to me before and it was always a loose flash. Pull the flash off and put it back on and make sure its on tight. My flash would work fine and then stop firing for apparently no reason, turned out it was a bit loosel

Pop off the little spring clip and tighten those four little screws!
That will fix your problem.

I agree... it's probably the difference between the I and II on the way they attach to the hot shoe. I'm sure with the I you are probably torque-ing(sp?) it down some and thus maybe getting a better connection with that loosy shoe.

As suggested the hotshoe was loose and loosing contact with the flash.

I took it into my regular camera repair shop that helped me with a lens problem and he simply took the camera out back and came back 5 minutes later and didnt even charge me. Great guys there. If anyone is in or travels to western australia, Hartland camera repairs in north perth is fantastic!

Thanks to everyone here who helped.
