Did you have web programming experience before your site?
I've been "creating" my site for a month, and still hate it.

I made my own using Serif WebPlus 10. I am not entirely happy with it and would like to change some things. (suggestions would be welcome). It is a first attempt so i suppose it will take time to develop.

I had my website loaded by my techie cousin. I designed, he uploaded it. I have no interest in the machinations, so he does it for me, and I save big bucks. In planning your site keep one thing in mind. KISS: Keep it simple. Use flash only as a last resort, like for DVD shows. And don't start your site with: Enter. As "pro" photographers we are full of bells and whistles, and believe me, the client just wants something simple. Just the facts! And please don't start about how you were first given your first camera when you were 9 months old, and that inspired you to become the next wonder boy of the 20th century, and your are just itching to do their wedding.

Did my own via Apple's iWeb product. Wanted something easy to update and very simple to learn. The problem I find with pro-designed sights is they're selling their programming skills, I wanted to sell my photography skills!

Cheers,
Chris

I did it, with the help of Gallery2 frontend (free php template).
What's the inspiration behind it?
Always nature, the natural beauty around me.

I had zero web programming experience, and that's why I used a customizable template.

I've done a first version of mine which took me months to accomplish but it was a pain in the a## to maintain. The second version took me about 1-2 months to be finished (I worked on it sparingly).

I have two sites up right now:

http://upstatephotographers.com is my primary site targetting wedding clients.
http://albanyheadshots.com targets headshots and glamour clients.

I have had websites for several years, although these are both relatively new sites I created last summer with Joomla. The portfolio sections are in the process of transitioning from Menalto Gallery to Zenfolio. I had a moderate amount of web programming experience before creating these sites, but a great deal of graphics and page layout experience.

My personal opinion is that many photographers create what is primarily a portfolio site, where in fact, what they really need is a business site. I think there is a big difference between the two.

Cheers,
Paul

I use free stuff: Joomla and Postcardviewer at the moment. I know Joomla well and felt like using Postcardviewer because it is apt for what I am promoting.

Mine is so basic it's not funny. It's fast and it works, and I have complete control, within the limitations of the applications themselves.

Because I always intended my site to carry tens of thousands of images I knew I'd need a database that returned thumbnail pics when searched. So my site is based 4images, but in the nearly six years that I've been running it and its predecessors I've made so many modifications that it's very difficult to see the original foundations.

That's a good thing for the most part because it's now tailored to my needs, but as I found out recently when I became dissatisified with my webhost and wanted to shift, all those mods can make it very difficult relocate a database at a new host that uses different naming conventions and a different control panel.

Before I started I didn't know anything about html, php and MySQL. Now I can whip up a page or fifty in no time. Can't say I enjoy it though.

Having a website was key in going from amateur to pro.

When I say pro I don't mean that photography is my main source of income, but It would have been close to impossible for me to get paid for my work without a decent website.

I tried several 'packages' and decided to stay with wordpress (www.wordpress.org)

Knowledge of HTML is a plus, but not required. I'm hosting it myself on my Linux server, but there are many company that offer wordpress hosting (including wordpress themselves)

I highly recommend it, as a blogging system at least. I had to use something else (pixelpost) to display my favourite pictures and imagevue for the galleries.

I do all my own design work myself. This includes: website, logo, stationery, flyers, leaflets etc.

When I was at school I started designing websites for companies to make extra pocket money. It taught me some good design skills which I have been able to use to this day. I also used to write software for various companies at this time too, so I learnt how to do CGI (at that time) and now PHP and Perl. They allow me to do all my own on site programming and IT needs.

The only thing I use that I have not written is the "View example work" galleries function on my site which I use Lightroom for because it is just so quick.
