Sigma 24-70 (2.8) or Canon 28-135 IS for D60, better AF?

The camera body does the focusing, the lens would determine the speed of focus since it has the motor, and the more light a particular lens lets in gives the camera more more ability to focus in lower light.

I am still on the verge of getting a D60, best price now quoted is
2799 Euros, and will be called when it has come in.

Now for the lens: Assuming i will also soon purchase a 80-200 reach
details will not be the most important but needs to be no less than
the sigma zoom range. additional wide will be nice. both lenses
have a 3.5 rating, but that does not tell the whole story i believe.

My questions if somebody would be kind enough to answer:
1) will the sigma have significantly improved focus ability given
it is a 2.8
2) will the non-usm part slow it down so much the gain is lost again?
3) I know Sigma needs to be switched from M to AF does that pose
big problems in practice?
4) what is build qulaity like with latest sigma lenses?
5) both Tokina and Tamron seem to do less will in the photodo survey

Any other issues i forgot about?

Price is very much the same in NL, sigma is probably a little more
expensive (20 Euros or so)

Thanks in advance,

Simon

Hi Simon,

I have the Canon 28-135. At 70 mm it is definitely sharper than the Sigama 24-70 EX. At the wide end I think the Sigma wins. I also have a Sigma 15-30 EX wich has the same focussystem as the 24-70 and I dont have any trouble with it at all

Wich shop in Holland is offering the d60 for euro 2799 ?

Regards

Fred

Sounds like an accurate analysis.

I would add that the precision of the focussing motor is also an important factor. For example, some motors might have more of a tendancy to overshoot the target. This could add a few extra cycles and time to the focussing process. The speed of their response is also a factor. This could delay starts and stops and also cause more hunting.

You really see this come into play when you pick up a L-series lens like the 70-200 F2.8. Often it seems to just snap right to the new focus point with no cycling whatsoever. Sometimes it is so fast and quiet that you have to look close to see if the focus changed at all...it is that transparent. Other focus motors, like the one on the Sigma 105macro, whirrrrr...back and forth...closing in on their target with each successive cycle.

My 70-200F4L seems to be like this. At times on a Rebel, the only clue I had that the focus had changed and was done, was the whole camera/lens mass would shift forward or backward as the lens/lenses stopped moving.

I am not much of an expert in photography, but even I can feel the difference IS makes. HUGE!!! especially at ISO 100 where it's usually necessary to shoot at lower speeds when shooting at soft lighting conditions. Anyway, IS is a kizmo I love.

Hi,

I think that for the money the Sigma cannot be beat. I think that only "L" lenses from Canon are better, but one has to pay for it. This Sigma is $350, and its 2.8 light helps with focusing a lot. D30/60 need this wide opening to perform decently, and a lens with F:5.6 just kills the autofocus in those cameras.
Besides, I find its image quality very good.

So, If not a "L" glass, go with Sigma.

Peace,
Bart

I signed up with Pbase a couple weeks ago. This is my "always on the camera" lens so you can expect lots more shots from it.
